Research reflection

I am in the stage of analysing the data I have collected for the case study. I am adopting interpretive and mainly qualitative approach in this process.
Using Nvivo software
I started the analysis of the tutor interview text data using this special software and my initial impression is that it is easy and very useful tool that helped me to organise my codes and the analysis results and keep them ready when I need to refer to them in my future study phases.
The coding process
My supervisor asked me if I am using the top down method in the content (discourse) analysis (can we use two methods in the same time?), I think that in my case it is necessary to start by finding the appropriate categories from the literature and to add other ones later as they emerge from the data itself. In addition I think that this two ways process will lead to think, reflect on and change the categories and the codes through merging or deleting some of them after doing the process and revising it.
I think also that it is important to link and relate the research concepts and questions to the analysis process to keep the work on track because I am confused: too many codes and categories!!
At the same time I am thinking about the issue of manifest and latent variables within the data. The reliability and validity considerations are twisting my mind too!!
