Not Right happenings

Things have been busy in the world of Not Right lately!

The big news is that we're playing LaDIYfest Sheffield this weekend. There will be workshops in the Quaker Meeting house on Saturday 30th November from 11am, and live music plus DJs in the Redhouse from 8pm. We're playing alongside The Ethical Debating Society, Weird Menace and Witching Waves, and will have a full complement of CDs/zines/t-shirts with us (including hopefully the shiny new Not Right #6 zine).

If you're not going to be anywhere near Sheffield this weekend, then you might be able to catch us (in spirit at least!) at London Queer Zine Fest on Sunday 1st December. Copies of our Punk Is Not EP and Not Right #5 will be available from the Robot Unicorn Records stall, along with a load of other awesome music from the likes of Etai Keshiki and Jesus & His Judgemental Father.

Finally, if you can't make it to either of those events, you can hear our music on a couple of very exciting new compilations that are now available.

Sex, Drugs & Birth Control: Vol 2

I'm returning to Brighton with Dispute Settlement Mechanism this Friday (22nd November) (to play Sex, Drugs & Birth Control - a fundraiser for Brighton Pro-Choice. Our very first gig was actually the first Sex, Drugs & Birth Control event, so it'll be great to return to Brighton and play some of our new songs for the same good cause.

The gig runs from 8pm in The Hope, Brighton. Entry is £4. Also playing are Demon Smiles, Old Radio and Killer's Riches.

DJ setlist: Shenanigans @ Canal 125, London (26/10/13)

I had a wonderful time at Shenanigans last night. A lot of people came together to make the event very special, with great lighting and decorations, impressive costumes amongst those who turned up, many fantastic DJ sets and an awesome live set from Ctrl Alt Del.

One of the really great things about Shenanigans is the variety of genres and styles. It's sort-of a goth night, but the organisers explicitly state that they want this to be a place for different alternative tribes to come together. This was very much the case, with metalheads, ravers, punks, indie kids and others joining the party. The music throughout the night reflected this, with the main unifying theme being an overriding sense of fun.

The other really great thing about Shenanigans was its inclusivity. This was a space for people of all backgrounds (in terms of age, gender, race etc) to feel safe and welcome. Unless I'm at a riot grrrl night, it's rare that I experience an alternative music event with as many women as men, or with individuals of androgynous appearance and trans people casually in attendance and not experiencing any kind of hassle.

My set opened the night. This is often a bit of a quiet slot, but I was delighted that people were up for dancing right at the start of the evening. I can't wait for my next opportunity to DJ for such a fun crowd.

I played the following tunes during my hour:

Rocky Horror Picture Show OST - Science Fiction Double Feature
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Jack Off Jill - When I Am Queen
L7 - Fuel My Fire
Disturbed - Land of Confusion
Sonic Boom Six - Virus
Skunk Anansie - Twisted (Everyday Hurts)
Savages - Husbands
Man or Astro Man? - Invasion of the Dragonmen
The Birthday Massacre - Red Stars
Orgy - Blue Monday
Scooter - The Logical Song
KMFDM - A Drug Against War
Wax Audio - Lady Judas (Lady Gaga vs Judas Priest)
Florence + The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
The Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism
Type O Negative - My Girlfriend's Girlfriend
Faith No More - Surprise! You're Dead
