iPad days 5+6
Follow-up to iPad Day 4, Sunday from Rudo's blog
I had to give a talk on Monday which I had prepared via PowerPoint. I could not get it to work on the iPad although I used DocumentsToGo (which allows you to edit/create/etc Office documents). Apparently, they do not have the VGA module included.
So, workarounds on the google space are (1) save the PPT as a set of figures and (2) save as a movie/video. Then use iPad onboard tools to display via VGA adapter.
But then yesterday, I also installed the GoodReader which in version 2.8 can display PDFs via the VGA adapter. So now, I can simply convert any PPT to PDF, put it on the Dropbox and then display using the GoodReader. It works, quality is ok, but of course one misses those interactive PPT gimmicks. But I hardly ever use those, so not much of a problem, I think.
Also, it seems that the [Pages] App should do a similar thing, i.e. be useful for presentations.
Summary: Yes, I can now use the iPad for presentations! And hence, I am beginning more and more to see it as an alternative to the laptop.

I’m not absolutely sure, but I don’t think you even have to do the ppt-pdf step if you don’t want; Goodreader can also display ppt files natively and show them over VGA.

If you were doing a significant amount of presenting with the iPad, a copy of Keynote (Apple’s version of Powerpoint) for iPad would probably be worth it. It can import Powerpoint files from Dropbox, and supports simple transitions (eg. dissolve, fade) as well as its own slightly fancier animations. So if you wanted to do something like unveil your bullet points one after another, Keynote would I think work better than Goodreader.

Yes, one can directly use GR to display PPT slides. But It seems that one can only “slide” pages across the screen, not “turn” pages with a simple touch of the screen. As I am nervous enough in talks, I prefer the page turning mechanism.

Just to make the clear after all this time; [GoodReader] is excellent. One can now markup PDF documents via highlighting/notes/etc. Also, I am now confident enough to simply use [GoodReader] for those presentations of PDF files. No problem anymore “sliding” pages.
[GoodReader] is an excellent iPad up and probably the most used one for me!
