AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

  • The peach-potato aphid was caught at eleven sites across England this week, with numbers increasing at eight. There was a hotspot at Wellesbourne (134).
  • The potato aphid was caught at five sites in single figures this bulletin week, increasing in number at three.
  • The mealy cabbage aphid was recorded from eleven sites in England this week, increasing at six. The highest number caught was from Writtle (87).
  • A single currant-lettuce aphid was recorded from the ST at Starcross this week.
  • The willow ̶ carrot aphid was caught at twelve sites this week, with numbers increasing at five sites. The highest number found was from Silwood (19).
  • The pea aphid was recorded from twelve sites this week across Britain and increasing in number at nine. The highest number caught was from Rothamsted (48).
  • The black bean aphid was caught at thirteen sites this week and increasing in number at nine across Britain.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 3rd and 6th July our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 14 male and 13 female
  • Bean seed flies - 16
  • Pollen beetles - 1194
  • Flea beetles - 64
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 10
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 3
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 46
  • 3 small white butterflies

We caught 2 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our carrots.

There were 6 diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and no turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 11 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 29th June and 3rd July our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 19 male and 8 female
  • Bean seed flies - 14
  • Pollen beetles - 1638
  • Flea beetles - 10
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 5
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 4

We caught 2 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our carrots.

There were 9 diamond-back moths, 0 silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 28 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 26th and 29th June our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 14 male and 8 female
  • Bean seed flies - 23
  • Pollen beetles - 1381
  • Flea beetles - 6
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 7
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We caught 3 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in our carrots.

There were 5 diamond-back moths, 0 silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and no turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were no cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

AHDB Aphid News

The latest edition of AHDB Aphid News is available.

  • The peach–potato aphid was caught at 10 suction trap (ST) sites this week, but with numbers increasing at only five. The highest number recorded was from Broom’s Barn (67).
  • The potato aphid was caught at six sites in single figures this bulletin week, increasing in number at four.
  • The cabbage aphid was caught from 11 ST sites in England this week, increasing at 10. There was a hotspot at Starcross (46).
  • No currant-lettuce aphids were recorded from the ST this week.
  • The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at 11 ST sites this week, with numbers increasing across England. The highest number found was at York (29) and Broom’s Barn (25).
  • The pea aphid was recorded from, and increasing in number at, 11 ST sites this week. The highest number caught was from Rothamsted (41).
  • The black bean aphid was caught at eight ST sites this week and increasing in number at seven across England.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 22nd and 26th June our 3yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 3 male and 9 female
  • Bean seed flies - 15
  • Pollen beetles - approx 12,000
  • Flea beetles - 0
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 3
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 0

We caught 3 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 3 diamond-back moths, 1 silver Y moth, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 1 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Pest update from Wellesbourne

Between 19th and 22nd June our 3yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 7 male and 6 female
  • Bean seed flies - 17
  • Pollen beetles - approx 7,000
  • Flea beetles - 0
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 0
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 0

We caught 3 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were no diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 7 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

  • The cabbage aphid was caught from seven ST sites, increasing at four.
  • A single currant-lettuce aphid was recorded from Silwood Park.
  • The willow ̶carrot aphid was caught at all ST sites apart from Newcastle, with numbers generally down and only increasing at York, Wellesbourne and Starcross.
  • The pea aphid was caught in single figures at ten ST sites and increasing at eight.
  • The black bean aphid was caught at nine sites including a hotspot at Starcross.

Between 15th and 19th June our 3 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 16 male and 5 female
  • Bean seed flies - 28
  • Pollen beetles - 797
  • Flea beetles - 13
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 3
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 0

We caught 7 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 3 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 1 turnip moth in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 0 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.

Between 12th and 15th June our 2 yellow water traps captured:

  • Cabbage root flies - 3 male and 0 female
  • Bean seed flies - 6
  • Pollen beetles - 608
  • Flea beetles - 5
  • Cabbage stem weevil - 2
  • Cabbage seed weevil - 0
  • Cabbage stem flea beetle - 1

We caught 14 carrot flies on 3 sticky traps in spring-sown carrots.

There were 2 diamond-back moths, no silver Y moths, no cabbage moths and 2 turnip moths in our traps (2 traps per pest).

There were 17 cabbage root fly eggs around our 15 brassica plants.
