Today's pest counts

Today there were 8 carrot flies on traps in our overwintered carrots (3 traps) and 327 carrot flies on traps in newly-emerged carrots (3 traps).

In the water traps (3) there were:

  • 9 male and 4 female cabbage root flies
  • 118 bean seed flies
  • 91 pollen beetles
  • 3 flea beetles
  • 5 cabbage stem weevils

There were 27 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants).

Update on suction trap captures

The latest issue of AHDB Aphid News can be found here. It covers trap captures between 2nd and 8th May. The corresponding Rothamsted Insect Survey Bulletin can be found here.

  • Peach-potato aphids were caught at 8 sites and have also been found in water traps in south-west England and East Anglia.
  • Potato aphids were caugth at 3 sites.
  • Pea aphids were caught at 8 sites.
  • Willow carrot aphids were caught at 11 sites, with a hotspot at Kirton (37). Winged willow-carrot aphids and their young have been found on carrot plants at Wellesbourne.
  • The first cabbage aphids of the year were caght at Wye and cabbage aphids ahve been seen on spring-planted brassicas in south-east and south-west England.
  • The first black-bean aphids were caught at Ayr and Starcross.

Pest counts today

Today there were 4 carrot flies on traps in our overwintered carrots (3 traps) and 206 carrot flies on traps in newly-emerged carrots (3 traps).

In the water traps (3) there were:

  • 80 male and 10 female cabbage root flies
  • 313 bean seed flies
  • 23 pollen beetles
  • 4 flea beetles
  • 4 cabbage stem weevils

There were 21 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants).

Insect counts today

Today there were 2 carrot flies on traps in our overwintered carrots (3 traps) and 92 carrot flies on traps in newly-emerged carrots (3 traps).

In the water traps (3) there were:

  • 215 male and 15 female cabbage root flies
  • 129 bean seed flies
  • 50 pollen beetles
  • 17 flea beetles
  • 14 cabbage stem weevils

There were 60 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants).

AHDB Aphid news

The latest issue of AHDB Aphid News has just been released (captures up to 1 May).

  • A small flush of peach–potato aphids have been caught in the south east this week, including a first arrival at Wye, one at Silwood and four at Writtle.
  • A single pea aphid was caught at Silwood and a single willow ̶carrot aphid at Starcross this week.
  • Further reports of cabbage aphids in winter OSR, but none have been caught in the suction-traps, suggesting these may have overwintered successfully on the crop.

Even more carrot flies and cabbage root flies

Today there were 41 carrot flies (3 traps).

In the water traps (3) there were:

  • 131 male and 26 female cabbage root flies
  • 250 bean seed flies
  • 126 pollen beetles
  • 7 flea beetles
  • 8 cabbage stem weevils

There were 53 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants).

Cabbage root fly eggs and more carrot flies today!

Today there were 19 carrot flies (3 traps).

In the water traps (3) there were:

  • 56 male and 24 female cabbage root flies
  • 437 bean seed flies
  • 23 pollen beetles
  • 3 flea beetles

There were 53 cabbage root fly eggs (15 cauliflower plants).
