Follow-up to Poster Woes from The randomness of tomorrow, today!

I've also just noticed a huge, massive, really stupid mistake:

On the poster I have an equation that correctly says that the velocity is proportional to the depth of the water; as the water get shallower the wave slows down.
However, the text I wrote to acompany this diagram says the complete opposite; that the velocity is inversely proportional.
This happens just after a section of text giving the correct relation.

Poster Woes

Writing about web page

I have to make a poster on a physical principle for Communicating Science tomorrow on How Tsunami Occur and it has to be printed on an A1 sheet. None of this is a problem; I set the size to be A1, created my poster with decent-resolution images, saved it as a PDF, and burnt it to a CD. The Physics department has an A0 printer, so printing wouldn't be a problem…

The problems only started when one of my friends was looking at the A4 printout I'd done and spotted a spelling mistake ('in' instead of 'is'). I just had to accept this as there wasn't really anything I could do to the PDF to correct it.
The next problem was that, after printing the poster I realised it had done it at A0 size; twice the size it's supposed to be. I checked with the guy in charge of the module and he said we'd just have to go with it as anything else would involve wasting paper and ink. An unfortunate consequence of this is that the spelling mistake is now twice the size it should have been…
The third problem occurred when I was removing the elastic band to show a couple of friends how ridiculously big the poster was and I put a small tear in the side.
Finally, when I was rolling it up after that, it got a spot of liquid on it that has blotted a small bit of the poster.

Still, at least it's done. Now all it has to do is survive until tomorrow…

Do you want fries with that?

Writing about web page

Bar Food's staff annoy me. I go up to them and say "double cheeseburger, please" and they respond with "is that the meal?"
That usually takes me by suprise, because what part of "double cheeseburger, please" sounds like "double cheeseburger meal, please"? If it's not that they're just plain stupid and complete idiots, then that suggests that they think I'm not clever enough to ask for a meal if I want one, so they have to check. Maybe everyone but me says "burger" when they mean "burger meal", but that implies everyone but me is stupid, and that's just not the case. The only logical explanation is that Bar Food staff are either inherantly stupid, or are trained to be stupid…
It's all just a waste of everybody's time.

Anyway, the rest of you can carry on with you lives now, but if there's anyone from bar food listening, then: IF I ASK FOR A BURGER THEN I WANT A BURGER. IF I ASK FOR A MEAL THEN I WANT A MEAL. IF I ASK FOR A BURGER I DO NOT WANT A MEAL, SO STOP BLOODY ASKING ME

Tick tock tick tock…

I've just come across an interesting poll on one of the websites I frequent:

If you had the opportunity to know the time and place of your death, would you want to know?

I was torn between the two, until I realised that knowing when I was going to die would lend a certain futility to my life; I'd probably have even less inclination to do anything (currently it's just laziness; laziness and a sense of mortality would not be a good combination), along the lines of "What's the point, I'm going to be dead in like 50 years."
So I went for "No" (as had a majority of people at that point, but only just over 50%) because then at least I'd try to achieve things.
Then I though that it might be nice to know something like a week in advance, so I could get my affairs in order, as it were.

The AllNighter

Writing about web page

The AllNighter was lots of fun again, and I managed to stay awake for the whole thing; only dozing off or a few seconds occasionally during Life of Brian. After we'd tidied–up we went for breakfast at Tesco's cafe; it's really cheap and the food is actually quite nice. Then I went home and went to bed. I've just woken up, so now if you'll excuse me I need to get some sleep…

Also, well done to all you bloggers who can say "Yes! I can!" to:

Can you go AllNight?

Bicycle Locks, or locks in general

If you want to secure something (a bike, say), would you rather use

A – A key lock, or
B – A combination lock?

There's no such thing as a free lunch

Except actually there is…

A couple of Thurdays ago, I want to Cafe Xanana ("bar, bistro, grill", but no mention of "cafe"...). According the clock in Xanana's kitchen it was 5 minutes before the advertised end of food service, but they'd already stopped serving. I got out my phone and sent an email to while I was still angry.

After an intermediate email to check a few details, Nick Seagrave (CCDO) emailed me back to say I could have a free main course for two people by way of an apology.

So, since it was still on the lunch menu the next time I happened to go there, I got a free lunch. Admitedly I also had a drink and a side order that I had to pay for, but the main course was free.

I have to compliment them on their after–complaint service…
