Unfortunately, following a period of consultation, IT Services have decided not to renew the RefWorks software licence. You will not be able to access RefWorks, or any of the references stored in it, after 31 October 2007. The EndNote software – an alternative to RefWorks – will continue to be available.
If you wish to keep the references stored in your RefWorks account, you will need to save them to a file. References created in RefWorks can also be transferred into EndNote. For more information on either of these, please contact the IT Services Helpdesk on 024 7657 3737, ext. 73737 or email: email@example.com.

Update: voting on this poll has now closed.
The University has subscriptions to both RefWorks and the EndNote referencing software and is currently reviewing this provision. It would like your input on which package you prefer. If you would like to vote, please go to the RefWorks and Endnote page on the IT Services website.

We've made a few changes to the welcome email you get when you sign up for a new RefWorks account. Hopefully, the new text will make it a little bit easier for you to get started with RefWorks.

RefWorks have recently made a small change to the RefWorks interface, which makes it easier for you when you are entering several references manually.
Once you have typed your first reference, instead of clicking the Save button, click Save and Add New. This will save the reference you have just created, then bring up a blank form to allow you to create a new one straight away.
Once you have entered your final reference, simply click on the Add button.

Did you know it’s possible to import references from the library catalogue into RefWorks? This is a two stage process. Here are some brief instructions on how to do it.
Stage 1: Saving references from the Library Catalogue
1. Go to the library catalogue.
2. Search for a book and click on the title.
3. At the top of the screen, click on the Save Records button.
(At this stage, you can go and search for other items. When you have found and saved all the items you need, go on to Stage 4.)
4. Click on the View Saved button.
5. Click on Export Saved.
6. Under Format of List, choose the option End-Note/RefWorks.
7. Under Send List To, choose the option Local Disk.
8. Click on the Submit button.
9. Select Save to Disk and click OK.
10. Save the file in the usual way.
Stage 2: Importing references into RefWorks
1. Log in to your RefWorks account.
2. Click on the References menu, then select Import.
3. Under Import Filter/Database, select the option Innovative Interfaces (EndNote/RefWorks filter).
4. Under Database, select the option EndNote/RefWorks filter.
5. Click the Browse button and select the file you have just saved.
6. Click the Import button
7. A message will confirm your references have been successfully imported.

A list of databases which allow you to export citations automatically to RefWorks in the correct format is now available. There are two methods:
- Databases which support Direct Export (where citations are downloaded straight to your RefWorks account) can be found on the A-Z list of databases. Items which carry the RefWorks logo support Direct Export.
- Databases which require citations to be imported can be found in a separate list.

A number of users have asked about placing page numbers into in-text citations. This is especially important to show that you have actually read the work to which you're referring! If you're using a name and date referencing system, like the Harvard system, you can edit your citations using Write-N-Cite's citation editor facility.
To do this, place the cursor within your RefWorks citation in Word, then go into Write-N-Cite and click "Edit citation". To add page numbers, for example "p.24", type in "p.24" in the "Text following" column. When the document is formatted, "p.24" will then display after the in-text citation.
Curiously, you shouldn't use the "Specific page" column – you would only use this option if your output style by default displays the entire page ranges of your reference within the in-text citation.
You can also use the citation editor to do things like suppress the author or date from the in-text citation (useful if, for example, if you've mentioned the author's name within the body of the text immediately before the citation). You can even choose to suppress the entire citation – this way you can include in your bibliography works that helped you formulate your argument, but to which you don't refer directly in your text.
Unfortunately RefWorks does not currently support the use of page numbers (or other edited text) within the in-text citations of numbered output styles, like the Vancouver style. RefWorks' support staff have been told about this, and might be able to make changes to the software to allow this. To add page numbers here, you need to use the create bibliography function first, then in the Final- version of your document manually add the page numbers.

We’ve made a small change to the library RefWorks information pages. Whereas before you had to log in before you could view the pages, now you’ll only need to log in if you want to find out the Group Code.
Hopefully, this will make the pages just that little bit easier for you to use.
