RefWorks Cancellation – ALL USERS PLEASE READ

Unfortunately, following a period of consultation, IT Services have decided not to renew the RefWorks software licence. You will not be able to access RefWorks, or any of the references stored in it, after 31 October 2007. The EndNote software – an alternative to RefWorks – will continue to be available.

If you wish to keep the references stored in your RefWorks account, you will need to save them to a file. References created in RefWorks can also be transferred into EndNote. For more information on either of these, please contact the IT Services Helpdesk on 024 7657 3737, ext. 73737 or email: helpdesk@warwick.ac.uk.

Any comments or feedback should be sent to Patrick Ryan.

Problems with Direct Export from OVID Medline – Alternative method

There currently appears to be a problem using the Direct Export feature of RefWorks with the Ovid Medline database. There is, however, a slightly more complicated way of getting the references into your RefWorks account, using the instructions below:

Stage One: Saving the references in Medline
  1. Do your search in Medline as normal and mark the references you want to keep.
  2. Go to the Results Manager at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Under Result Format, select Ovid.
  4. Click on Save.
  5. On the next screen, select Windows Style Linefeeds and click Continue.
  6. Click Save to disk.
  7. Give the file a name and choose where you wish to save it, as normal.
Stage Two: Importing the references into RefWorks
  1. Log into your RefWorks account.
  2. Click on the References menu and select Import.
  3. On the next screen, under Import Filter/Data Source, select University of Warwick.
  4. Under Database, select Medline [OVID].
  5. Under Import Data from the following text file, click the Browse button.
  6. Find the file you saved in Stage One and select it.
  7. Click the Import button.

Exporting your RefWorks references

If you wish to export your RefWorks account to another format (for example, if you want to transfer your references to a different piece of software, such as EndNote), you can do so using the instructions below. Full details on how to save your references and import them into the EndNote software, can be found on the EndNote website.

  1. Log in to your RefWorks account as normal.
  2. Click on the File menu and select Export.
  3. Choose your preferred format (for most purposes, you should select either Bibliographic Software or Tab Delimited).
  4. Click the Export to Text File button.
  5. A new window should appear containing details of all your references. If you have a pop-up blocker installed, it may not appear automatically, in which case, click on the text Download it.
  6. Click on the File menu for either Internet Explorer or Firefox and select Save As… (Save Page As… in Firefox).
  7. Choose where you would like to save your file and give it a file name.
  8. Your references have now been saved and can now be imported into other software.
