Euro 2008 Day 21

Spain is through to the final. Please watch the final on Sunday.

As we almost come to the end of this somewhat crazy Euro 2008 journey, let's start giving awards to those people who make this tournament interesting and crazy.

The one with the craziest hairstyle

Dutch coach Marco Van Basten- he shaved his hair off right before the start of the tournament (weird) probably hoping that his team would be inspired to win Euro 2008 just like he did in '88 (even more weird). For some more or less obvious reasons, the Dutch lost.

The one who we will miss for years to come

Jens Lehmann- aggressive, scary, grumpy, yellow/red card, oh, and German. He is leaving Arsenal and off to a German club called Stuttgart. Let's all hope him well.

The one who we will be joking about for ages

Petr Cech. Why? The blunders he made against Turkey.

The one who is musical

Slaven Bilic- he is a guitarist and the Croatian fans were singing songs written by him.

The one who behaved badly

Joachaim Löw- he is nothing like Klinsmann. He was sent off during Austria-Germany and he SMOKED during the next match. Bad guy.

The team who is disappointing

Holland- they did very well in the group stage but they did rubbish against Russian. Without all these overworks from their goalkeeper/skipper, they would have been humiliated.

The team who is surprising

Russia- they got into the semifinal and one of the reasons is that they have Guus 'Mr Fix-it' Hiddink as their coach.

I think it’s a little harsh on the Dutch to award them most disappointing – three games of fine football merely came to a halt. The French team didn’t even get out of first gear.

  2. I have spared the French because after their Euro exit, I have found out that one French player called eh….oh yes, Thuram has some sort of heart defect which has gone undetected for some years. So, I guess that’s one excuse for the French. With Holland, you can almost always trust them to get through the group stage (unless they are REALLY rubbish). After that, not so sure. In Euro 2004, they got into the 1/2 final (which was how I got hooked up to the Dutch). This time, although they played better in the group stage, they could only manage a 1/4 final.
