Am I an Asus salesman?

No. I’m not getting a commision. But by sitting every morning in the atrium of University House using an Asus Eee PC 900 ultra-portable (£250 from ToysRUs), I think I am doing an effective sales job. Sometimes a constant stream of people come to have a look. I have to explain that it actually belongs to my 3 year old son, but is so good that I have borrowed it (until I get one of my own).

This morning he watched a Nigel Marven dinosaur documentary on it as we cycled to the University. Horrific screams and roars coming from his trailer, “Giganotosaurus tears at the flesh of Argentosaurus” etc…

    I’d love to hear more about what you think of the device. It is a very tempting format of device, but it is hard to decide how much I’d actually use it. Real hands-on info would be great…!

    We’ve been using it for the following:

    • watching movies encoded in Quicktime to iPod standard (a feature film is usually under 350mb, I have an 8gb SD), they display very well at full screen, and the speakers are fine (although headphones are needed when in a busy place);
    • BBC iPlayer TV and Radio, excellent;
    • web browsing, Google mail, Google docs, etc, I installed Firefox 3 with no problems;
    • Skype, as the built in echo cancelling mic is superb;
    • Viewing and indexing photos with Picasa, very useful when on safari.

    I also have a big screen and speakers that we plug it into.

    It’s been to Africa, and in daily use by me and Lawrence. Seems very robust. The battery life is too short on the 900, but that is fixed on the new 901.

    Most importantly, as I am a very mobile worker, it is extremely light and small (fits into a small shoulder bag).
