RaW Triumphs at the Student Radio Awards

Last night saw the RaW hardcore head down to London for the annual Student Radio Awards. With eight nominations tucked safely under our collective belt we were all hoping for a night of success, and what a night it was!

Not since 2003 has RaW been so successful at the SRAs and in the end we amassed a tally of one gold, three silver and two bronze awards meaning that only two of our entries failed to reach the top three of their respective categories. Sadly one of these entries was the RaW Sport Quiz which we had entered into the Best Comedy/Drama category. However to be honest we were delighted simply to get a nomination as, after all, we are primarially as ‘serious’ sports show.

For me at least, the disappointment of missing out on recognition with the quiz was more than made up by coming second in the Best Interview category for the interview I did with Boris Johnson as part of the sports show. I was quietly confident that this entry might do well, even though I was up against RaW’s very own Chris Doidge with his David Davis interview. In the event Boris just pipped David into third place, however myself and Chris are still talking (just).

Elsewhere the big win of the night was for RaW’s charming band of techies, led by the irrepressible Chris Cantwell, who took the gold award for Best Technical Innovation for our flashy new digital playout system. Almost as impressively, however, was that RaW claimed second place in the Best Station category. Personally I was delighted that we had been nominated, but to claim runner up spot was an amazing achievement. Obviously everyone in RaW had a part to play in this particualar entry, however Jimmy Buckland and Alex Shapland Howes should receive particular congratulations for putting it all together.

Finally Jimmy and Adam Westbrook picked up silver in the very competitive Best Entertianmnet category and RaW Sport’s Matt Rebeiro claimed bronze in the Best Newcomer category.

So there you go. A night to remember (albeit one some people might find difficult to remember!) for all the RaW faithful. Hopefully we will have similar success next year.

Full list of RaW’s achievements at this year’s SRAs:

Best Technical Innovation – Gold (Chris Cantwell and co)
Best Station – Silver
Best Entertainment – Silver (Jimmy Buckland/Adam Westbrook)
Best Interview – Silver (Peter Swan), Bronze (Chris Doidge)
Best Newcomer – Bronze (Matt Reberio)
Best Comedy and Drama – Nominated (RaW Sport Quiz), Nominated (Doppelganger – RaW Speech)
