European Athletics

The European Championships start tomorrow in Gothenberg (Sweden) and Great Britian, who won 7 golds 4 years, don't look too optimistic for bring home medals – in fact none of our athletes are favourite to win a gold and the 10 medal target (the aim of performance chief Dave Collins) may still a realistic target but I doubt we will get more than 1 gold at the most.

Here's my top tips for British medals:

Kelly Sotherton – Heptathlon
Olympic bronze medalist, suffering from a back injury that has stopped her from training this week but she is a fighter and should put in some strong performances. Her biggest problem is world and Olympic champion, Carolina Kluft – with home backing.

Dean Macey – Decathlon
Injured and virtually held together by gaffa tape but he doesn't seem to allow pain to affect him. He still thinks he can give Czech, Roman Sebrle a run for his money.

Tim Benjamin – 400m
Still almost a second slower than Iwan Thomas' British record but not too much in way of opposition in his event.

Christine Ohuruogu – 400m
Won the Commonwealth in fine style but suffered injury in preperation.

Philip's Idowu – Triple Jump
Should get second behind Sweden's Christian Olsson.

Jo Pavey – 5,000m (Women) and Mo Farah – 5,000m (Men)
both have good times in their events and without the African's (seeing as this is the Europeans) the races should be relatively slow and enable them to dictate the pace a bit more.
