The new buzz word that has emanated from the Student’s Union is ‘integration’. After the visit of the prestigious Aldwych Group to the University there is a growing fear amongst some of the top ranking sabbatical officers that international students at the University are not getting integrated enough into the student community. This fear has led the Student President himself to take personal action on the matter, he has started canvassing opinions from a variety of home and international students as to what he sees the problem as.
One of the problems that has been identified is the idea that there is a small number of international students who are having to bear a heavy burden in order to make up for the lack of other international participants. This could become a serious problem in future years as the University has a growing number of international students coming to study. The Union is conducing a study into the opinions of students therefore, in order to create new policies in order to make international students more a part of the student community and also gauge the reaction of home students to the growing number of international students.
Despite the fact that elections are around the corner, the Student President and the rest of his sabbatical team still have around half of their term still to go. This means that there is plenty of time for them to put forward new ideas and set in motion new policies. With time ticking on their time in office however, is this simply a case of a few old men in a hurry?
Sources within the Union say that some sabbatical officers are worried about the ‘disconnected’ nature of the Student’s Union.
Using the example of a recent attempt by many students to have a Chinese Takeaway installed into the Union, it has been rumoured that some are not entirely happy with the manner in which the decision was taken or the final result. The attempt ended in failure, however certain sabbatical officers believe that the idea of a Chinese Takeaway was certainly financially viable.
Moreover the way in which the idea was ‘dumped’ at Council is said to have worried this may have turned people off the idea of coming to the Union with ideas. The proposed takeaway was taken to the Communications Officer, James Gatsby Peet, however the idea was officially rejected at Union Council when those that had proposed the measure asked a question about it at the meeting. Some feel that it would have been better had the Officer himself had broken the news rather more subtly then it was, however there is no confirmed evidence as to whether the Communications Officer had spoken with them about the issue before the meeting.
With Presidential Elections in the offing and a new Sabbatical Team in the offing, it will be a chance to show candidates how ‘connected’ they are with the general student populace. Though this minor issue may show how successful the present sabbatical team has been at presenting itself to students at the university it may play on the mind of voters for the next sabbatical elections as well.
