I'd Like to Hear Your Ideas!

I'm always looking to make the quiz as enjoyable as it can be for you guys. Naturally people have different tastes and I can't please everyone at the same time. I would like any suggestions that people may have for how the format can be improved (I have many ideas myself but I'm not sure whether they are implementable) and any suggestions you may have for specialist rounds.

Also I'm thinking of expanding the prizes if I can, but not necessarily for performance in the quiz. I was thinking of a prize for the team with the best hat or something like that. It would be good to hear your opinions on that.

Cheers

  1. What sort of prizes are you guys giving away now-a-days? I remember back in my day, we started giving away TVs and HiFis and stuff and the attendance rocketed. Before that it was just a crate of beer or something. Of course they were only cheap crappy little TVs and HiFis but they really drew people in.

  2. The prizes do get a bit tedious, especially if you win regularly. There was one point in my 2nd year when I had 17 litres of lager that I had won and hadn't got through.
On another note, the current quizmaster is the best RAG have had in all my time (4 years) here. Keep up the good work!

  3. Thank you for the kind sentiments…I try!

With regard to the prizes, I appreciate that the offering may be a little monotonous, but it's difficult to cater for large teams. It needs to be something that can be broken down between (in theory) eight people, so individual items aren't really appropriate. What's more, it's fairly safe to assume that most attendees would like to win alcohol.

I may introduce other prizes (in addition to the existing ones) next term. Watch this space.

  4. Quiz Regular

    As ideas for specialist or interval rounds I was thinking;
-Photos of bands: You have to name the bands
-Famous Quotes: said by whom or about what
-Silhouette of a bottle of a type of liquer: name the liquer
    -Film Quotes: What film/actor/character?

I bet most of these have been used already. I'll go away now

  5. I have consideref the quotes for an interval round. I've used a couple in the general knowledge round, though my favourite was from Bob Hope. Last year, on his death bed, his wife asked him where he would like his ashes scattered and his response was, "surprise me!" I can't use that one now but it was worth it.

    Thanks for your comments

Good quiz yesterday, though I would say that having won…
The round my friends and I dislike the most is the music intros rounds. Admittedly, this is because we suck at it, to be honest. It has to be said that the round has become a bit more varied under your stewardship, Neil, but we'd love it if just for once it was even more varied – say a bit of well known jazz or classical music. Of course, some people may find this too "high-brow", but that could easily be compensated for during the specialist rounds.
Yesterday's interval round was good – I remember setting a quiz once with a round like that, only using former Soviet republics instead. Bit too tough, that one.

Oh, and one thing we miss – the film link question. It's often quite fun attempting to work backwards when you have the link, trying to fill any blanks you may have, and guessing the link can sometimes be quite tricky. If you feel the link question itself is too easy, then you can make the preceeding 9 a little harder, as then teams have a decent clue with which to tackle the hard ones.

Anyway, shame there isn't one next week – I remember there was one hitch-covering quiz conducted by a team of Sabbs, but it was awful…

    See you next term!

  7. Andrew,

I have considered playing some jazz or classical stuff. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with that, but it does set a precedent for including other forms of music that I know absolutely nothing about. For instance someone asked me yesterday if I could play some rap songs. I know precisely nothing about rap so I wouldn't really know if it was difficult or not. When I do it I try to cover five decades of mainstream music so I hope that there is enough there for everyone.

I got rid of the link in the film round simply because I find it a pain to write. If you are going to have a proper link then the previous nine questions tend to be of a similar format and I like to keep it varied. I'll see if I can work it in somehow though.

To be honest I'm a little bored with the format. I tend to think that there are too many rounds and the opportunity to score highly is too great. For instance I would change the joker system so that you had to declare it before the round rather than after you've answered all the questions. Whether that will ever happen though is another matter.

Thanks for your comments though they are much appreciated. See you next term.

  8. I would like a specialist round on Naomi. You come up with 10 questions and we'll have a go at answering them.
