Welcome to the 'Lord Rootes Project to the GBR' Blog.
This Blog has been set up as a personal record of my experiences planning, conducting and writing up my Trip to Australia that will hopefully be funded by the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund.
A Study of Coral Disease on the Great Barrier Reef.
Outline of ProjectOne of the factors threatening the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is coral disease, which is known to be present on the reef since 1994 yet so far only two detailed studies on coral disease of the GBR have been conducted. I propose to study the prevalence of disease on the GBR using video transects and ask; “Does frequent diving on a particular dive site have a detrimental effect on the reef causing increased disease compared to other sites?” I will also be comparing the amount of disease present depending on the location of the reef.
I propose to use video transects to record the disease levels on nine reefs. The results will be analysed with help from Dr Charles Sheppard and presented in a report accompanied by video footage. Where possible I will also use data from previous surveys that have been conducted. Whilst on location I shall also conduct interviews with local residents and tourists to gauge their opinion of the impacts of disease on the GBR.
Fingers crossed that I will be successful in gaining funding from the Lord Rootes Memorial Fund and I will be able to conduct this exciting project! Keep checking for updates on how I'm getting on!
