There are lots of reasons for doing postgraduate study –some better than others – so it’s worth thinking out how further study can help you achieve your long-term career goals. Bear in mind too that it can be expensive as most taught postgraduate courses are not funded.
Here’s the “health warning”. Postgraduate study won’t necessarily make up for a poor undergraduate degree nor will it guarantee you a job afterwards. It won’t help you decide on a career direction either if you see it as a way of putting off entry into the job market – in fact you may find your proposed course doesn’t help you at all! If this is your situation, talking to a careers adviser might help.
So what are the benefits of postgraduate study? It can give you an edge over other candidates. You’ll have increased subject knowledge and will have developed skills such as project management, research, intellectual curiosity and time management. Added maturity is another bonus. And at Warwick, many postgraduate students have said to me how much they value exchanging ideas with other students from all over the world.
A well thought out choice of course, related to your planned career, can certainly improve your job prospects. Some courses are essential for your chosen career such as vocational courses like the Legal Practice Course for solicitors or a PhD for scientific research. You may also be offered a higher starting salary if the employer sees the value of your postgraduate study. So choose your course carefully and you too can reap the benefits.

If you're looking at postgraduate study, whether taught or research, you might like to make use of one of the University's Postgraduate Drop In sessions.
Held every Wednesday during the summer term (that's 20th April – 22nd June) in University House (13:00 – 15:00) they are a good chance to find out more about the options here at Warwick.
The link above has more information if this sounds useful.

Have you had an offer of a place on a Postgraduate course at Warwick University? If so, you need to complete and return the 'decision card' you received in the post.
Once you return the card you will then get the updates and additional information you will need about studying at Warwick.
