Things that Sabbs can't do…
I’m just trying to list the things that people have promised in their manifestos that are impractical or impossible, as some may vote on the basis of these “promises”
Feel free to add more, and I’ll add them to the list.
Stopping the Uni throwing people out of accommodation for smoking cannabis
Providing free busses for all after union events
Hmm… can’t think of as many now as I had when I was reading the posters earlier

[Skip to the latest comment]Significantly improving library funding also springs to mind when one considers unrealistic promises.

There’s the possiblity of lobbying the Uni as regards their policy on cannabis, but it’s quite likely the Uni will refuse to play ball.

“No more 9am lectures for 2nd and 3rd years”?

Oh come on, the University are never going to soften their stance on cannabis while it’s still illegal. It’s a pointless campaign point, designed to make candidates look cool and down with the kids. For another president to waste their time on the issue would be very depressing.

”...I will look into getting the Resident’s[sic] Network in halls improved so that users can get higher connection speeds and less downtime.” (Alastair Wood)
You might as well go and bang your head against a brick wall.

You’re right, we should just sit there and take it. For fucks sake, how many positive changes in the last century looked likely when someone first started to do it. Of course its unlikely anything will be done about ResNet, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. If no-one keeps pressure on them to improve services, then they will go downhill, a little pressure could at the very least maintain standards. I don’t think anyone’s promised free bus services (which would be ridiculous), but again lobbying for a better late night service (possibly part-subsidised) is an acceptable way for a welfare sabb to spend their time, making students feel safer and better catered for. Obviously the 9am lecture thing is a complete joke, but with the rest, just because they’re unlikely doesn’t mean there’s no point in trying.

What you say is true, Chris, but the problem is that promising to lobby the university on issues where no one seriously expects any measurable progress is a.) a very easy promise to make, and b.) a very easy promise to keep, but at the same time it achieves nothing as far as Union members are concerned. Union officers certainly should be lobbying where appropriate, but endless promises to do so at election time just suggest that people don’t have any concrete ideas to implement at the same time.

From the manifesto of “The Great Gadsby”
Free buses back to Leamington and Coventry after nights in the Union
From Olly Hambry
Finally put a stop to students being evicted from Halls of Residence for smoking cannabis in the privacy of their own rooms.
Lobby the University to create more unrestricted car parking areas and to give better value for money to students with parking permits. – Would be fairly un-joined-up thinking with the Uni’s new “green” policy
There are quite a few more ideas that are never going to happen, because as far as I understand it the Union has a hard enough time breaking even already, especially with the new rebuild, without significantly increasing costs and reducing income. Why would we vote for people that don’t understand basic budgeting??
How about just giving us confidence that they’ll be able to handle the rebuild, and stop making rubbish puns based on their name?
Ah well, it’s nearly over now…
