Britain needs compulsory voting

Writing about web page

OK, it's yet another IPPR think piece and it's not exactly the first time round the block with this one.

And it does seem a little extreme: basically it amounts to an admission of failure – so many people have become disengaged from the political process and show no signs of rejoining, therefore we are going to force you to vote!

Having said that, I think that it is worth a punt.

What I find difficult to work out though is how big the penalty should be for NOT voting? Death? Tar and feathers? Sitting in the Countdown audience?

  1. I think the idea of compulsory voting completely misses the point of voting.
