What should be the main aims of University education?
I have been considering a rant for a while. I'm approaching the end of my degree and do not feel I have got value for money and wasting three years (sort of). But before I do go off on one I would be interested to know how people would answer the following questions…
What should University education be trying to achieve a) for an individual personally and b) for society as a whole?
What changes would you make to the University system if you were in charge?
Is this some well-disguised way of you getting other people to think up an agenda for your time as Sabb? :p

For the record, I would answer as follows:
a) "to develop one's life in as many ways as possible" – this is an exact quote from David van de Linde during his introductory talk to me and my parents on my first day here.
b) "to enhance the productivity of the workforce, and the quality of life of everyone in society (either directly or indirectly)" – this one I made up myself.
Obviously these are very much idealistic answers, and are unlikely to actually apply in reality, but such is life.

Before i came to university I had the naive impress ion that by the time i graduated I would know all(!) there was to know about my subject. Now I realise that would take a lifetime!
