Completing the Journey !!!

Hi,

Finally on the verge of completing LE PMA, i would rather say as completing the journey. Learning different types of leadership and getting the knowledege on how to implement it in real case was amazing. It is a fact that we dont know the output yet, but the part of learning was enermous. Everyone can be a leader and we all are here to do it at some point of our life.

Leadership journery is diffenent for different people. Some are in search of anwers to problems, some want to achieve only goals, and some wants to enjoy its full journey until it ends. Hence if our approach is correct to how to go about in journey, then immense knowledge, learning and fun will follow.

But I would change my statement and rather state that: "The Journey has just begun in real sense"

Door is Always open

Hi,

Going through the Leadership theories and all the leadership stuffs, i have found one similarity amongst them. Each theory talks about the availability of leader. Availibility in the sense that Leaders are always there to solve any problem.

But one thing i am sure that no Leader likes i.e. he/she being contacted every time in order to check the decision. I personally believe that if you force or make your employee to take the decision themselves then only they will become confident as well as effective. The main aim of a leader should be to focus on the employees and to see whether they are soving the right problem, leader should make sure that he/she have selected proper member at proper palce. It takes a long time to solve a typical issuse, but nothing is impossible.

After all this I personally feel that if i would be a leader i would rather make employees to take decision, even though i am aware of the solution. I would rather guide them to right path as being a coach, and try to see the effectiveness of each employee. And i am sure that it would be a good development for the employees if they see this as a positive activity. And coaching them will actually help them to feel that they are the ones who got to the solution and will feel motivated. Hence there is a vital role in shaping employees. As there is a vital role of Parent on moulding a childs behaviour same is with the leader moulding the employees behaviour.

A leader Coach ??

Hi,

Yes.. A leader Coach.. what it means ?

While going through the PMA, i tried to found out the reason why we are given this type of PMA, like coaching a leader... Later reflecting on it i found out few reason why a Leader should be a Leadercoah.

As we know coaching is different then leading. So should a leader be only leader or should be a leadercoach ?

The answer according to me is a Leadercoach. There are various reasons i think that proves that a leader should be a leadercoach. Coaching is not just for coaches. Everone can practice this in his/her life time. A effective leader is the one who tries to get every possible thing from its team. As we all know a leader generally cannot follow one leadership style and as well as he/she needs to give formal feedback, informal feedback. He can be a mentor, a coach. The role of coach is to make others think what is right for them and to guide them. So to give a solution or feedback is not coaching.

As we know that effective leaders are the ones who grows leaders. Hence by following this coaching method he/she can be able to motivate an employee saying that all answers of the problems are in themselves and by just helping the employees to think more and employee will think that he/she came to conclusion. Hence a leadercoach can be said as an effective leader. There is lot more to it as it is a wide topic, But what do you think ?

Emerging Leaders: Learning to lead

Hi,

Emerging leader is a very attractive word. We always wait for that person to see. We assume who will be our emerging leader ? or who has capability to be a new leader ?. this can inculde any thing, like country, team, organisation. etc.

Who exaclty are emerging leaders ?

From my point of view uptil now what i have studied in leadership module and books i have read, i got to one thing that emerging leaders are the one who has inner talent, to perform or to prove themself more than what others expect. It is not necessay that if you give good outcome then you can become a leader. Or in simple sense we can say that the best sportperson is not necessarily the best team captain or coach. Ex Sachin Tendulkar.(CRICKET). Emerging leaders are the ones who are self awared of what are they doing. They are clear about how their actions affect other people. etc. So overall the one which can handle the pressure, and can take decision at that time by keeping everone in confidence is a leader according to me.

Some times it happens when a leader personally is not performing good, but he can handle his/her team with great confidence and it results as expected. So can this be called as an effective leader ? As generally emerging leaders gradually as time passes tries to become an effective leader. So can this leader be called as effective leader even though he/she contributes 0 to performance but 100 in handeling the situation.

Do leaders focus on Performance ?

Hi all,

Going through my PMA, i found very interesting thing in a book, which stated that There are major four possilbe reasons why most leaders do not focus on Performance. And from it the main i think is the below discussed two

1)The author stated that most of the leader thinks that Performance is like breathing air. And they think that people in the organisation should not be asked to breathe. As it is a natural process. What do u think do all leaders do it ?

As per my view i think that there might be some leaders who focus on the work rather then what are they going to achieve. So from this i got one thing that in future if i am a leader then Getting performnace will be my first target.

2)The second point author stated was, leaders think that perfomance is a natural result of being positive, profssional, and people focued in the right way.

But this is not the case, as people tend to be positive but are not performing, and so on. So from this i learned that dont see the behaviour of the people, see the performance they give. And in that process try to imporve their behaviour if it is not satisfactory.

Silent leader ??

On tuesday we had a great exercise. We had to bid for an hotel and had to manage it for 18 months... The simulation task was fun, but one thing i would like to share with you all which came out from the task.

We satared with great exicetment, enthusiasm, and taking a vision in mind to make out hotel profitable. It was fine uptil 2 quarters, we were making loss but then also we had positive energy in our team, thanks to Learder who managed us well and kept out exicement going on by taking our views and listening to the members. It was fun being a follower. But this situation chaged after second quarter.

From the third quarter we got a leader who was absolutely not knowing about the business or the way we were working. So the members explained all the things to the leader, but i personally felt that leader was not intersed or not exiced enough to do the task, or there might be other reasons. We did not receive positive comments from her. Even though we were listened but our decision was not taken into consideration.

The main thing which i felt in the task was that how should be the role of a leader ?

The second leader we got was a bit silent and was not effiecent enough to take the decision. So i felt that the leader is new so i should support her and should take over in making decision as i was knowing what was going the hotel and what we required to do. The leader remained silent and was listening to my views, and at the time of decision making we thought that she was not proper as she asked again and again for our views. I was just trying to keep the tempo of the other team members going by encouaging or by remaing enthusiastic and positve about achieving good resutls, but i was not able to see this from my leader.

A leader is the one who should initiate the culture in the organisation where he/she can build a culture where people feel to work and remain positive, but in our case leader was silent and i was doing her part. I sometimes felt bad taking over her, but then thought if the leader remains silent and dont come to conclusion then we might not achieve our results, so i took over her in the sense of influencing team members and creating a healty discussion so that every member contributes. I was sometimes agressive but i wanted to see whether the leader tell me anything or not, but that also did not worked. So i tried to get her leadership skills out but she remained listening to me.

Do you think i was wrong ??

Hence i have a question in mind can there be a silent leader ? If so then the leader will face the worse situation where the followers will take over him/her in positive or negative way. So if the leader is new to the business it is the responsibility of the leader to get into the business and know what is going on and should be able to control the members.

Hence i am still not sure that should there be a silent leader ??? What do you think ?

Does Coaching help ?

After the exercise of Coaching, today with Grames, i was actually surprised by the results i got from it. I was given the task to Coach one of my classmate, and the same classmate had to coach me. We were given situations and we had to act on it and should seek guidance from coach.

At the end of the exercise i felt actually that coaching is a great task to do. I internally felt that i was facing the real situation of coaching my classmate who has problem, and i actually sought it out by getting answers from the same classmate. The greatness of Coach lies in they dont answer directly but they try to get answers from the one who he is coaching. So i did the same thing asked question and tried to get solutions from the same person. And i was surprised as i was actually working and i also thought that questioning matters. How do we question the other person and how do we try to solve the issue taking the person into confidence is the main thing.

When i was being coached, i felt i should not say my personal feelings to my coach, but then thought that he is the one who will help me to solve the problem so I should share with him keeping trust on him. And when the coach started asking question i really wanted to get the situation solved, so it made me think a lot. And the things which i didnt thought before was comming to my mind. Hence i thought that this was the great part of Coaching.

If we get somebody to just question us then, it is the time when we can explore ourself. Hence by doing this actually it was I who got to the conclusion that i should do this so solve the situation.

So i thought no one is better than others, the thing matters is the way of seeing it. Coaching helps us to see things diffrently and will help us to get to solution. what do u think ?

Watch the video i was really inspired by the video when i saw it.

Can a leader follow specific types of leadership ?

The question concerning my mind is Can a leader follow specific types of leadership ?

We had lot of discussion about this topic when we had seminars as well as after the presentations and at the time of exercises. I was not able to make out exaclty, that there are different types of leadership but which one exaclty a leader follows ?

I think and you also might be thinking that it is based on the situations.. But then how can we say that the particular leader is Autocratic or democratic or any other if he cannot follow the same style thorough out ? So what term can we use for the leader who apply all the skills or can chage its leadership styles when necessary ??

It is obvious thing that a leader should change according to situations or should behave in different way with different individual as all are not same... Hence according to me i think that now a days a leader cannot follow the specific style of leadership as the surroundings are changing fast so a leader needs to cope up by acting differently when required.

Hence a leader is the one who needs to remain updated so that he can influence the followers to follow.. :) This is I think the most important thing a leader should have.. what do u think ?

How can a leader tackle their toughest challenge ?

Since so many days i was wondering about how can a leader takle their problems and achieve success in different situation ?

After having read many articles and going through the books i got a lot much understanding about how a leader can tackle diffrent situations. I would like to share with you all.

The main thing i got to know that he should be flexible as we know that in every situation they have to work and achieve goals with the help of followers,, so a leader should be flexible enough to change according to the situations.

Leader must be Visible, in the sence that no followers should feel like leader comes and goes when he has to inform us. But leader should should keep in touch with everyone as much as possible

He should lead it from frot.. There are many examples of this type of leader, who lead it from front and were successful to achieve their vision.

Listening skills is also an important thing a leader should have in order to get rid of worst situations they are facing. As it provides knowledge from everywhere means every follower might give suggestions and from that a leader has to decide what is the correct way to tackle the situations.

Leader should have courage to take tough decision at time. A leader should not worry in worst situation. An effective leader is one who keeps its cool in worst situations.

I feel that this points discussed are just the starting... but what do you think ?

Am I a good leader ?

Today one more thing hit my mind when we were discussing about leadership in the class.

Am i a good leader ?

I was leading one group of 800 students when I was in school. I was the captain of the particular group where i needed to inform my group members about the diffrent events taking place in the school and needed to encourage them to participate as well give them motivation to win. As we would gain more points if we win and at end of the term the group having highest points would win and the captain leading the group would receive appraisal.

Thus i was able to influence the students to participate and i had a vision of getting the highest point at the end of term, so was the goal of the students participating. Thus i can say that it was a shared vision of our group students that they wanted themselves at top. At that time i was able to bring my group the runners up position where i was not satisfied, but in general after the positive feedback i got from my fellow students i was satisfied and which was most improtant for me. As without them i was nothing. So followers plays a vital role in order to let leader prove their skills.

Finally even i was not awarded as the best leader award but i was awarded with the best student of the year award which meant a lot to me..

So i again got a approtunity to prove myself at Warwick and so this time i voluntarily became the team leader as i wanted to prove myself that i can be a good leader. And this might be true after two weeks of the module where at last i will get the feedback from my fellow member about how i lead the team. I would like to follow the way i leaded before and will try to convince members as well will listen thier ideas and all togather will try to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves as well as shared vision of team to perform well in the coming two weeks.

If this happens then i would receive my answer to the question.
