Heart of Darkness

Camera: Canon EOS 350D
Lens: Sigma 18–200mm f3.5–6.3 DC
Filter: UV +Circular Polariser
Date: 10th September 2006
Location: Jepherson Gardens, Leamington Spa
Focal Length: 48mm (equivalent focal length: 78mm)
Shutter: 1/13s
Aperture: F/8
ISO: 400
Comments: More black and white. I had planned this shot since walking through it one evening in the dark. It was different in the day, and also quite busy. Admittedly I forgot to take off my polariser, but I don’t think it’s done much to it. I mono’d it post-photo and added a green filter to bring out the foliage. It’s not the best, as I found it difficult to get the exposure right; with the end light all perfect yet the shadows just right. I think it was because I took it during mid-day. I’ll try it one evening with a tripod and see what happens (aka. get mugged). Another attempt can be seen here
Post–processing: b/w with green filter, cropped.

Hi there – I like the photo but a couple of things jump out.

One – I think it would benefit from a tighter crop getting rid of some of the black at the sides (especially effective in the pther photo you linked too as that has greater definition in the ceiling of the foreground tunnel). Also, when cropping you could straighten it out as it is slightly off vertical. A slight twist anti-clockwise.

Also, the car at the end of the tunnel is too washed out and would be great if you could get more detail in that. If you did some exposure bracketing using the tripod you could overlay the shots to get the nice exposure of the tunnel but still be able to see detail in the light at the end…). It would be hard to do much in post production as it is pretty whited out.

One final thing – a bit of unsharp mask would make tighten up the foliage and shadows a treat.

    And don’t get mugged!

  2. Excellent! Thanks for the help, I’m always looking for criticism and this is brilliant! Thanks for the help, I’ll give it all a go at some point and post results :D

No worries – I took the liberty of having a play myself.

Shout if you want me to remove them but I otherwise have a look at my cursory efforts…

  4. No problemo, I had a go and didn’t get very far. I think I’ll have to go back and shoot in less harsh light (read not mid-day sun)!

Nick! I have no Warwick account anymore, how sad is that… :(

I love this picture. Just had to tell you.
