An anecdote from my youth

When i was about 12, i was on a family holiday in portugal. It was late one evening, we’d just had a lovely meal in a restaurant and we were wandering through the town on the way back to our abode. While we were wandering, we found a german fellow with a massive moustache and an acoustic guitar, just playing beautiful soothing music to the passers-by. His music was so nice we bought one of his cd’s, got back to our place and put it straight on.

Since then, he’s become a beacon of classical acoustic guitar music for my family. We’ll remember him and share a joke, and often (probably more often than any other artist) sit and listen to his cd.

Point is, i found out this evening that this fellow had passed away, and i just wanted to mark the occasion. Outside of my family, i only know of one person who’s even heard of him, and that’s only because i lent him the cd. If you like mighty mellow, single acoustic guitar chillout tracks, give me a shout and you can have a listen. I want to spread the love.

Rest in peace Norbert Langensiepen.

Just read your comments about Norbert Langensiepen, my wife and I loved his music and bought his cd Algarve, last year we tried to find him to buy more of his cd's but alas we could not find him. Now we probably know why we couldn't find him. Why does talent like his have to be lost, rest assured you are not the only one. We will be going back to the Algarve this April and we will go looking for his cd's. Do you know when or how he died? i also note on Google if you type in his name John Spendelow who obviously knew has him on his website. We found his music exactly like you did. ian

Yeah, i found John Spendelow's website too. In the Norbert Langensiepen section he says there were only ever 2 cds recorded. I have overnight but not algarve. If you're interested i could make you a copy of this one and send it to you? Alternatively John Spendelow says he's got cds available for sale if you want to e-mail him? link

I'm afraid i don't know any details about his death – just what i read on this website.

Look forward to hearing back from you, dave

hi, hopefully the wait is over, i was sitting in a customers car and guitar music was playing on the cd player, i found myself not caring about the job in hand on the vehicle, but instead listening to a fantastic guitar player. i am learning guitar at the minuate so i ejected the cd and quickly wrote down the name 'Norbert Langensiepen – the algarve'. i have searched everywhere but unable to locate these cd's, i am even waiting for the customer to return to lend his copy. i have e-mailed john spendalow so hopefully i will be able to obtain and listen to his music. thanks for the links.

Hi, I'm from New Zealand and was a bit stunned to read your anecdote. 4 of us were Holidaying in Albufeira in May last year and spent the best part of a day in and around the town square listening to Norbert and a another group of chaps from Ecuador playing Nth & Sth American indian music. My friends bought his CD as a gift for my birthday and it now resides on my PC with a 5star rating so I get to listen to his music every day. I also took several photos and stitched them into a panorama of the square with him playing at the time. We were there before the holiday season but there were a lot of people around so I can only imagine how many people have experienced his wonderful music. I find people always seem to comment when they hear it. I am most thankful to my friends Marty & Misso for their special gift and one thing's for sure, Norbert may be gone but it will be a long time before he is forgotten.

Just heard the news about Norbert how sad is that, met him last year while on holiday and we built up a rapport with him what a nice guy who could make that acoustic gibson talk he did several requests for us what a star being in my 50s and been going to concerts since about 16 and seen some class acts i put Norbert up there in that class he played with great passion he only had 1 cd for sale at the time which was overnight but we were going to meet up with him in april this year as he said he would have more as said by others before he will not be forgotten, i will still go to the square and drink to Norberts memory in the usual seat thanks for music Norbert and god bless you

We have just returned from Albufeira: the town square was torn up and we could not even sit in the usual place and imagine listening to Norbert. I have his first three CDs and have e-mailed John Spendalow to try to get "Algarve". If anyone knows of another source of supply, or can let me have a copy, please mail me at sammullin8@hotmail.com.

For the last 4 years I have gone with my wife and friends to Portugal in March to lsten to Norbert. I bought a copy of Algarve and played it all the time. I had an operation some two years ago and played it on the morning of the op. It certainly helped me through bad times then and since.
When I went back last year I told Nornbert how his music had helped me through. I bought the rest of his CD's. I play them, like my friends, all the time.
I was checking on the net in February last for any updates. I was playing Norberts music. I cried when I realised he had died. It was a shock. When we went back last month the square has been dug up. Norbert has gone but his music and memories will live forever.
He was a lovely man who played his guitar with his heart.
I asked in the restaurant on the main street how he had died. I was told he collapsed whilst playing in the square.
I suppose he would have wanted it that way.
Norbert your songs will live for ever.
He recorded 4 Cd's to my Knowledge. Algarve,
Guitar ri Sibile, Just one Guitar and Overnight. I am fortunate as I have them all.
When the square is finished they should errect a statue to this lovely man. He did more for Portugals tourist industry than anyone. Rest in peace.

I visited Albufeira in March 2004 with a wonderful lady i'd recently met. we both shared a love of music, and in my time I have seen most of the worlds top band/guitarists. To sit in the square listening to Norbert's playing was a memorable and delightful experience , and his talent was as great as any i've previously witnessed. Only found out he'd died last week and am so sad to think i'll never have the opportunity to meet him again. so pleased to know that so many others share my memories.

I have just heard of Norberts death, how terrible, he was such a nice guy always remembered us on our many visits, He would play for about 2 hours 3 or 4 days a week just beautiful music. The last time I spoke to him was in June of last year He did say he was in the process of completing a fifth album, which would be available Sept/Oct. We were planning to go to Albufeira around October when I was hoping to get his latest offering but due to problems at home we were unable to make it.
Rest in peace Norbert and thank you for the music

    Hi All,

I too love the music of Norbert Langensiepen and I bought his CD Algarve last year when he played at the square.
What a talent!!! We sure missed him this year but noticed that several restaurants played his music on the patios.
I would like to have the other 3 cd's.

I am willing to share my Algarve with your other 3 if anyone has them and is willing to share .
Please contact me and maybe we can arrange a temporary swap so we can make copies and sent them back.
    Thank you , Ralph

Hi I am a guitarist (also play street performances) and today I was reading about Norbert Langensiepen's death. I only met him twice once in 2000 when I played Cavatina for him on his own guitar in the square and I breifly met him again in 2003. That time we just talked about playing the guitar and arranging music. After hearing this sad news I am looking to get a copy of all his albums with a view to playing a tribute to him back in the square. They will not sound the same as Norbert's as I play classical guitar. However I have a distinctioin in guitar playing at the higest grade with the Royal Schools of Music London. So you can rest assured that they will be well performed. If anybody would coppy the four CD's for me. I will pay for the postage and recording costs and I'll get to work on the project pronto.
I have a feeling Norbert's with me here.
    God bless you,
    Peter.

Hi, I'm a distant relative of Norbert and about a year ago tried to order the 4 CDs off his website but got no reply (for reasons that are obvious now). I'd love to get all of his CDs so if anybody has them, or has a link to where I could buy them easily then I'd be most grateful. Is anyone in touch with his wife?

    Thanks

    Mike

No here's a quandry. I never heard him play in person, but was passed a copied CD some years back. The music was "Just One Guitar" and made me an instant fan. I've looked for the real CD's ever since and have been sadly disappointed to find them rarer than a good steak.

I'd love to find more of his music, and to pay for it given half a chance….

    Wow,
Just now I´m reading that Nobert passed away…I can´t believe it. I knew him quite well and often hung around his house with his family – that´s so weird. I have never seen anyone who was so full of energy, he was such a nice and gentle guy, and now he´s gone. I really feel for pertra and his children, that must be so unbelieveble hard for them. And you know it´s only thanks to him that I started playing the guitar some 10 years ago. I will always keep him and his music in my heart but the Algarve will never be the same without him.
