Floating Paperclip
Camera: Fuji FinePix S602z
Date: 23rd February 2006
Location: My Room
Shutter: 1.5s
Aperture: F/2.8
ISO: 200
Comments: The light source is a glowing orb with a card grid in front of it, hence the odd colour and stripes. For future reference it's really hard to get a paperclip to a) float and b) be still!
Post-processing: Cropped

Brilliant! How did you get it so still?

After waiting a while for the water currents to stop jiggling the paperclip, I figured it must just be random surface and air motion jiggling the paperclip around… so I went a bit Robinson Crusoe and fashioned an magnetic trap for the paperclip. I wanted to submerge the magnets, but they would have dragged the paperclip under – so I attached them to a metal ruler held over the water:
This placed the paperclip exactly how I liked, because it wanted to align along the magnetic field to minimise its energy. Any movement away from this local minima would give rise to a force pushing the paperclip back into place.

Thats dedication! By any chance, was the paper clip used from the floor at the physoc elections? Bit of a long shot..
