What I believe

It's coming up to Christmas. Traditionally a religious festival. So I thought that this might be a good time to think about what I believe.

I'd like to start off by saying that I am a lapsed Christian. This is due to a combination of me being brought up in a religious household, which has given me a healthy disrespect of Christianity. I believe that Jesus existed and that what he taught was (and still is) a fairly good suggestion for a way of life, but the whole being God thing I'm not so sure about.
Fry: "So, what's the deal? You guys don't believe in Robot-Jesus?"
Jewish Bot: "We believe he was built and that he was a very well programmed robot, but he wasn't our messiah."

I also believe that anyone who takes the Bible word-for-word is STUPID. Even the people writing the bloody thing realised that it was a metaphor. The people alive at the time that Genesis was written probably didn't think that the world was created in 7 days. In fact they probably didn't think about it at all. I very much doubt they'd have kicked up a fuss if someone happened to say "I think it may have taken a little bit longer…"

I believe firmly in evolution. It's simple and elegant. If I was God (even if I had built the world in a week) I'd have included it if I'd thought of it. It's the simplest way of fitting a species for survival in an ever-changing environment.

I believe in set theory. I like it. It's useful. I was given to understand that it forms the basis of all mathematics, and see no reason to dispute that. Sets are powerful.

And I suppose there is one last one of my beliefs that I can think of at the moment, and the one with the least basis in fact. The one that is least intuitively obvious. The one which you could actually call a belief, rather than a bit of common knowledge that I particularly like. Namely: "Someone's already said it before". Yes, I believe that no matter what you are trying to describe, there is a quote somewhere by someone which is appropriate. I was hoping to illustrate this by either putting a suitable quote for each point or even writing the whole thing in a series of quotes form other people, but frankly I couldn't be bothered.

Oh, nearly forgot. Time travel. Travelling backwards in time is either impossible, has huge restrictions or will never be discovered by mankind. The reason being that otherwise someone or something would have already come back. I firmly adhere to the theory that (were time travel possible) anything you did in the past would be stuff that was already done in the past by the time travelling you [that makes no sense, does it]. Basically all of this trousers of time stuff is bollocks and you can't actually change things if you go back in time.
