Last day of KBAM.. and the presentation


Friday was the last day of the module KBAM.. we had to present to the Board of directors of the company.. this presentation was very close to reality and was pacticle.. the question answer session was also very practile.. it took us more than 200 hours as a team to work on the presenatation but we had to present it in just 20 mins.. soo.. skimming it down was one task..and providing the BOD (board of directors) with convining facts was another.. it was fun.. as every team was dressed up as a group..some wearing proper formals..while some sharing the same color of jeans..

KBAM was an eye opener for me… I came to know about the scope of this topic and what companies have to do.. to me.. before this module.. asset and knowledge management was like.. a day to day activity of an organization.. but after the module.. I came to know about the magnitude of this management..

KBAM was the last module of CBE and we all were in same class for the last time.. it was sad.. but on the other hand.. I was happy to.. to every end.. there is a new beginning..

Mistakes..reinforcement..habit….procedure…(KBAM)

Well.. some reflections on the short movie we saw in class…it was about knowledge and asset management.. there was a scene in the clip where the worker took a wrong turn and closed the wrong valve of the cylinder.. and there was this blast.. killing and injuring many.. the first thing that came into my mind was.. that what made that worker make a wrong turn.. was his mind pre occupied? Was he not familiar with the consequences of the act he was going to perform..i think..even everyday task are to be repeated again and again.. their procedures.. how they work and what would be the results if they are not performed well… these are all of the things that should be reinforced daily.. or at least weekly.. there is a very good example of this.. in which reinforcing can help… whenever we enter an aircraft.. before the takeoff.. we are shown a video about the safety doors and what to do in emergency..despite the fact.. many of us have travelled and find it quite boring..when listening to it again.. but this is important…to reinforce the procedures and processes.

There was another very good example given in the class about doctors.. when the senior doctor had done his operation.. he is done with his most important work.. and he starts to talk casually with his staff.. while the staff is now performing their most important task on the operation.. there was this case which I remember.. took place in a very well reputed hospital in my country.. in which the doctor left some cotton inside a patient while operating his liver.. it was later found out that the doctor was in hurry as he had to pick up his children from school… what type of error should this come under??

more on Maintenance (KBAM)

hello again.. different types of maintenance include reactive, predictive and preventive maintenance..

my understanding about these terms are as follows:


Reactive maintenance:


Reactive maintenance is an approach which focuses around the maintenance aspect when the problem has already identified. The action is taken to repair the problem as a reaction to problem. It has many disadvantages like delay in production, no warning signals, possible secondary damage.


Preventive maintenance

:preventive maintenance can be linked to medicine. it reduces the incidence of disease and significantly increases the life span. It has 3 main steps. The first one is daily prevention, healthy checkups are the second step and the last step is early treatment of diseases. PM has a task list which includes the possible actions which are taken to prevent problems. They include things likeinspecting for leaks inspections the machinery for leaks, cleaning, making adjustments, lubrication and replacing old components on schedule. When talking about the costs of PM, it can be divided into two main categories. The first one is single occurrence costs, which are the cost which occur only once for example, cost of buying systems to store data, training, modernizing the machinery, etc. The second type of cost is ongoing cost which continues through the life span of the asset. These type of costs include short repairs and replacement of parts etc.

Predictive Maintenance:

Predictive Maintenance refers to a set of techniques that inspect an asset to predict when a failure will occur, thus allowing time to make arrangements to replace the faulty part without affecting production. There are a number of technologies which are used to detect deterioration like chemical analysis, vibration analysis, temperature measurement, etc.

maintenance comes under the umbrella of asset management.. as assets are to be maintened.. my reflection and learning about maintenane is that Maintenance:


It’s an approach that revolves around the preservation or ability to preserve an asset to produce safely and economically. In recent times, this approach can be used to achieve continuous improvement in organizations.
There are basically three main stages in the evolution of the modern maintenance approach. The first stage of maintenance was up to World War II, when the industry was not so mechanized and advance.

Most equipment was simple and easy to use with little complications. Skill required for equipments were also not complicated as it is today. Maintenance at that time was simple and easy. At that stage, reactive maintenance was used as a maintenance tools i.e. fix it when it is broken. The second stage of maintenance was after the World War II. The pressure of war forced the industries to produce better quality products.

In 1960’s, the maintenance tool used was predictive maintenance. The cost of maintenance was low, the asset’s life was longer and there were routine check up dates for maintaining the plant or asset. The third generation of maintenance started in 1980’s. The importance of downtime was realized and the industry moved on to the approaches like just-in-time approach. The cost for maintenance went up because of the dependence on physical assets rose... well this is for today i guess.. ill be reflecting more on maintenance this week.. and more on knowledge and asset management

finally..done with LE..(LE)

Finally, the last blog for the best module in MBE. The module of leadership has polished me in many ways. My thinking and my acts are affected by the learning I got from this module. Lessons learnt from this module are many, but there are some of the key concepts which are understood by me in a greater detail along with its implementation.

Motivation, inspiration and setting examples for others to follow are some of the key traits of a leader according to me.

Managing change is another task which a leader has to perform and execute. Taking on board all the stakeholders including employees and shareholders while taking decision is also important in leadership

A leader can give direction to a group’s thinking and also can mould the minds of his followers in the direction of what he thinks.

A leader has to be charismatic, transformational, visionary, confident and supportive.

Leadership…..(LE)

Hello.. soo while concluding my pma.. I just want to share some points with you people.. what I learnt..

Charismatic leadership ..as the name suggests.. leaves a charisma on the other person..people having such traits like convincing. Motivating, humble and confident.. a charismatic leader should also listen to his employees and give them time and room needed for innovation and creative thinking.. This type of leader should have discuss topics with the employees which are not only business oriented, but also on general topics. This will increase the level of trust on him by the employees and workers…

A transformational leader, on the other hand.. helps an organization to transform and change. This type of leader has a vision and direction in his mind. He, with his transformational abilitilies to convince, motivate and enhance teamwork brings a change in the organization.

If both charismatic and transformational leadership styles are used together, this could have positbe impact on the organization and the people who work for this organization.

Leadership.. (LE)

Hello again.. today I will talk about the leadership approaches which I like… charismatic and transformational leadership style is the one I like the most.. a charismatic leader is the one who takes on board everyone and sets a self example for others to follow….

He is inspirational and convincing…he also makes his workers and peers comfortable in brining a change by convincing the importance of change… a transformational and charismatic leader prevents the internal problems and conflicts within the company…

Charismatic leader can build a bond of trust amongst his workers and even suppliers.. he is not only result oriented.. but he also gives personal attention to problems of his workers…

leadership..just a beginning.. (LE)

Hello people.. I am just writing the of my PMA of leadership… to me..leadership style matters a lot...

leadership style depends on the leader as a person… if the leader is confident and motivating… and the chooses a leadership approach which can enhance the working conditions and engage the workers to work with more dedications, acts as a cheery on the top of the cake.

. leadership can be inborn or can be adopted…to me.. leadership is more inborn that adopted.. because its easy to work on something you have then to work on something u don’t.. leadership abilities in a person can be polished and enhanced to bring the better side of person out which can have a positive effect on the workers in an organization.

I will be writing more blogs till Sunday on my learning about leadership.. but to conclude this blog.. I would like to say that this module has changed me a lot and brought a positive effect in me..

now I can think of leadership approaches which suits me and I can influence others and motivate others to a goal… I wish I could be a very good leader to influence my poor people in my country to bring a change in my country with me.. thank you Paul for organizing such a great module..

2 days lecture… 1 presentation..enough? (RMD)

RDM.. Robust decision making.. as the name suggests.. is about making good decision..

we had the module for 2 weeks.. the first one was study week.. where we had 2 days of lectures and then a case study to work on....in groups… we gave the presentation yesterday…

but I was just wondering.. decision making and its tools are so important in daily life and business decisions.. we should have more seminars and group activities… 2days lecture… and one day of presentation is not enough I think.. there could have been more task for decision making as we had a lot of tasks for leadership in LE module and we learnt a lot… What I suggest the module designers is.. that make some exercises for decision making..

and let us implement the decision making tools in real life scenario… although I learnt a lot in this module… it was the best module after leadership.. but I was expecting a bit more from it… 


Last day of module (RDM)

Today we had our presentation about the robust decision making… we had to present the strategies for wave rides, which was the company we were focusing.

Our approach was different as compared to our other class fellows which choose lymington as their option for location. We chose Exmouth as the location. It was quite a difficult decision to make, as lymington was very easy to choose with skilled labor and good transport facilities but the production capacity was low.

We focused on the long time aspect of the product and company and gave our proposal to the board of director to choose Exmouth as location, train employees and use a good advertising budget which should include radio, flyers and magazines. Once the company goes with this strategy, it will benefit it for long term as we have to have a vision for long term benefits instead of short terms.

Some people gave an idea to keep both locations but I think this was irrational because there is a cost associated with keeping an extra site for production. I as quite worried about our presentation as I mentioned in my previous blog, but after the presentation, I felt confident that the decision we proposed were right and implacable. Qualitative and quantitative analysis is also important when making decisions.

Today was the last day for the module and what I understood about the module was that decision making is not that simple as I thought it was. There are a lot of tools associated with making decisions.
