A5 An Introduction to Critical Thinking

3rd February 2010

Tutor: Emma Williams

Each time I attended a certain workshop, I would surely gained something useful from it. As for this workshop, I learned that critical thinking is based on reasoning and arguments, with credible evidences. We did not analyse and interpret the matter critically, but try to figure out and justify the reasons behind it, its limitations, implications and so forth. Besides that, language plays an important role here too, especially the use of emotive language, rhetorical questions, modal terms and so on.

Frankly, I do not knowhow I can develop my critical thinking, except doing a lot od readings and thinking. So, my action plan for this objective will be:

  • Newspaper reading (increase my interest on unpopular topics, eg, politics)
  • Reading useful blogs
  • BBC

Not only do you need to read – you need to look for the reasons and arguments in what you read. This needn’t be with new things -= it can be with any of the things you have to read for your modules.

Hi Mei Ling. I just wanted to share a quote on critical thinking with you. It goes like this, ‘The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.’ (Bertrand Russell). Best wishes.
