Cheap scientist's trick

You need to get a graph or plot of some data. You don't know how to program or do this properly.

Output to text file and plot using Excel.

Bet all the MOAC people do this .. lame!

Really! Did you finally succumb to gnuplot? Or are you being lame again :-P

  2. You haven't justified why Excel is rubbish. Maybe as a scientific tool it isn't so great but it can be produce nice graphs that are highly customisable. The postscript output from GNU plot and Matlab etc is okay as it's scalable but usually it is harder to make it look exactly as you want. Without conversion you need a postscript printer to print it which not everyone has. If you output to png or something then I would consider this worse than excel (which is still vector based). You could of course program a graphing application (openGL graphs would be good) but I don't relish that :-)

  3. Excel makes the nicest looking graphs around, and plays nicely with OLE. GNUplot bites. Origin can do the business numerically, but to get those nice plots into some format that looks good in a thesis is challenging, at best.

It's all about using the right tool for the job.
