Calling AMD64 addicts

Follow-up to Help Mike build a computer! from All that you know

In light of recommendations that going for AMD64 is premature, I wanted to fish for AMD64 users (specifically running Linux or Windoze XP 64-bit beta) for opinions and comments on their purchasing decision.

If you presently own an AMD64, would you have bought it in hindsight?

  1. well, sorry to wade in on this wild discussion, but i thought i'd say something, perhaps not entirely of interest. I'm too strongly thinking about getting an AMD64, but haven't really given any though to what operating system I'll use. This is because, as far as I have seen, the 32 bit performance of the AMD 64 3500/3800/fx53/fx55 etc are so impressive, you can buy them on their 32bit capability alone.

Now, i have £1,400 :) to build a new amd64 PC (am currently wrestling with an old amd 2200), but I'm waiting for PCI-Express motherboards. Currently none exist, and a PC without a Motherboard isn't really a PC at all. They should be out by the end of the month, which is good, but depending on how desperate I get i'll wait for Dual PCI-E motherboards, so then it becomes possible to "SLI" two 6600/6800's together if and when money comes available to buy a second.

So, in summary, buy AMD, if only on its 32bit performance stomping on Intel in everything but encoding, which Joe Bloggs or indeed Michael Li perhaps, doesn't do every day. They run cooler, run faster, can do 64bit with the right OS (i think i'd get windoWS 64bit beta, and perhaps even a Longhorn 64bit beta depending on how stable they are :).

Just a month or so to wait :).
