Position power and Personal power

As Paul mentioned today the two different power of leaders: position power and personal power.

I do not agree that much a leader can get anything he wants using the position power. Because though you are holding the chairman or CEO positon, you can not meet every expectation you developed. Loss or low turnover happens. objective is there, you are on the way of achievement, but whether can reach or not depend on many aspects not only the effort you put in. like find a boyfriend, it is by chance...- -|||....however, if there are guiding policy or suggestions, the process will be much easier by avoiding mistakes happened before depend on the experience.

those leaders only use the position power, they do not care about development positive, inspirational and influencial relationships with those they lead. those employees are not happy or even feel not respected, how can they help you to achieve the target? maybe this time but not next time or continually.

on the other hand, personal power allows leaders to create a team of engaged and enthused followers by developing a deep, trusting and inspiring relationship. However, as Ayham asked during the class, some employees just 'enjoy' the freedom you give them, do not have any conscientiousness, this will cause a waste or failure of the business. kind understanding, respecting from leaders may not be returned by a postive working attitude of some emoloyees.

in my point of view, balancing of both power is essential to the leaders.

take advatage of personal power, a less stressful and more rewarding way to lead. however, a leader should use his position power to do some punishment or actions about those negative workers in order to not only win the esteem but also develop a motivating culture. because in some degree, a strict environment can enhance the efficiency.

who should be the leader?

very exciting to start with this module which I have been expected since the beginning of the course.

today we got a story of the lifeboat to pick up the leader who you would chose to rely on.

different people has different view, who should be the leader? in other way, what characteristics should a leader have?

from my thinking, a leader should be someone respected by all team members.

while looking through the information of the six people, everyone has different advantages and disadvantages.

no one is perfect and a leader will not be a perfect man. However, he/she can still guide the team to make the problem sorted out.

leaders can be someone who is good at moitivating people and allocating members appropriately to maxmise the value of output. the leader himself may not abtain specific skills, because once the group member has the ability, it is enough for sloving the problem in some situation.  however, it requires that the leader must take advantage of group members.

here comes to a question, if members of a team all have well knowledge background and experinced, Hierarchy concept is not allowed here.

for example, in investment banks, the employees are all obtaining strong skills, this one graduates from Oxford and that one graduates from Cambridge. only analyst, assoiciate, partner, senior partner and director exist and no manager.

so, who is the leader?  who should be the leader?

lean manufacturing2

six sigma is the right approach to build defect-free processes.

integrating the tools and techniques of six sigma within the larger framework of Lean production,

one can make the deliver high-quality, low-cost, custmer-specified products on a sustained, continuously improveingbasis

this is true whether the product is an automobile or a transaction at an automatic teller machine.

tools can be used as follows

small-batch or single-piece continuous-flow process


Pull scheduling

reliable process through total productive maintenance

capable processes

other tools such as kaizen, visual control ,5s's single minute exchange of dies and mistake proofing

PMA reflection

finally submit my PMA.

this is really a tough period for me. during my undergraduate period, i did accounting only done one essay during 3 yrs.

this is a big challenge for me to write 5000words with no writing experience even dont know how to put reference.

but classmates help a lot and paul's feedforward.

during idea exchange,,some misunderstanding was found.

and paul's feedforwad guide me to the right way to answer the question.

time management need to be improved.

congratulations to myslef..no matter how good the pma is...i do make my effort.

leadership in EFQM

while doing the pma, a deeper understanding of the EFQM model is built.

leadership in this model is quite important, have relationships with every other enablers and results.

leaders have to built up strategy...leaders have to communicate with employees and make them involved, leaders have to negotiate with suppliers  and customers and maintain a sustanible partership, leaders have to manage resources rather than raising a waste. leaders should understand the process and make sure the organisation always on the way to achieve their objective

when leaders do these, they have to consider customers requirements, make a good deployment and execution of people stratetgy, build a good reputation and carry out the process relate to all these results.

leaders seems to be very busy and suffering a lot in this model..also, they have to improve themselves frequently.

not all people are born to be a leader...although experience is important, also need an ambition and cofident to be a good leader

lean manufacturing1

six sigma in some book always comes up with lean manufacturing together,but they are not the some phylosiophy, do they should be combined? but have to understand what is lean manufacturing first.

lean manufacturing known as lean production, it is a business philosophy. Toyota Motor Company developed it first,where it was called Toyota production system(TPS).

The objective of of Lean produciton is to eliminate all forms of waste in the production process.

six sigma is aim at creating a stable process, reduce the waste at the design stage. they have very similar objective.

wastes in lean produciton are overproduction, waiting for machines or operators, transportation waste, process waste resulting from inefficient and poorly designed processes, excessive inventory wasted motions through operators leaving work stations to fetch required suppliers or through continuous reaching, searching, or carrying goods. waste of rework through producing defects.

when all these waste is eliminated, the order production life cycle time is compressed. short cycle and delivery time, higher quality, and lower costs are all positive resluts.

there are many techniques to deal with waste work result in a whole that is greater than the sum of the individual techniques. if the manufacturing process is changed, lean manufacturing will produce high-quality products built to customer requirements at lower costs than traditional manufacturing.

brand effect

when talk about the continuous improvement, thinking about what enterprises are doing well and maintain in the market for long time, like Cocalola,nokia,hp etc, bud do any one metioned Chanel, Dior, Estee Lauder..these luxury brands.

most of them starts from 20 centry, LV, Hermes, Chanel,GUCCI they all have a long industry life time at making bags, perfume, make ups. especially the handbags, they all very expensive, one hermes bag can equal to a car!

but why they exist? their price is expensive, and products do not innovated every year?

the effectness of brand! it is the most easiest way to make money from women...

during the economic cirsis,nearly all industry sales went down ,but the sale volume of Dior's lipstick kept increasing,even more than previous market figure.

rearch shows that women want to attract their husband or boyfriend, they make up to be sexy. especially when it comes to a difficulty time for their guys business.they may be upset or diappointed.

this stranges situation always happens in women's shoes,make ups, handbags , they run business depending on women's requirements, design products to be attractive for women.

women never be stingy to themselves.

maintain the market should know the characteristic of the market first.


Cp or Cpk stands for process capability index.

it means in a specific period, what's the capability of the process to produce products at a stable ,controable level.

operator ,machinery , materials,envrionment and technology this five main factors effect the process consistently, and the final production is effected by this five major factors.

during the production process, variation always exists. Cp compares the process spread to the width of the tolerances, tolertances should be at least as wide as the process is or more wider.

but Cp is not enough, may the tolerance of two process is same but one of them not lacated into the limits, Cpk is needed.

it measures the likehood of producing non-conforming product of the process. Cp compares the distance from the process centre to either tolerance, Cpk measurs the distance from top/bottom to the centre.

the process best situation is that Cp equals to Cpk. Cpk will never exceed Cp.Cpk can be negative if centre is outside of the control limits.

leader or employee?

leaders and employees are both essential within an organisation.

which one is more important,i.e is more effective to drive the organisation?

from my point of view, leader is more important.

genius and talents are existing among empoyees, they may from the production line familiar with manufacturing skills,they may technical staff..but what happens if they were not positoned or talent ignored?

thats a huge waste to the organisation! even they may not statisfy with the team, and leave.

this need good leaders to guide them,listen to them.

one of my friend she is really a good worker, get into a company with huge passion, think she will do very good.

but after half an year,she quit. she said although it took one hour to go to the company every morning and have to over work everyday, it dosent matter because she love her job. but when time move on, she found the management system is terrible, most staff is unhappy with the company, sales went done and no bright future for that.

after i heard this, i believe that how a good leading team is important.

100 talent idea means nothing only when can be gathered!

taguchi examples

Roger's presentation provide a great experimental understanding to taguchi method.

he showed the sample of a warhead and how to use taguchi method to make the lip match the filling.

pointed out what control factors are, like header too design, pot design, bitumen height, cooling in cone,

and then carry out experimental results like the day we did helicopter exercise.

different consequences give different answers, this way provides all possible situation to find out what the best results and the resluts fall in to the limitation.

the noise ratio measure the robustness of the system. noise factors are those variables which infulence the system but cant be controlled by designer. customer usage conditions, wear states or manufacturing process variation may be too expensive or impossible to control, but we have to consider them when make a product.

maybe in theory ,taguchi method is not special, means just gather the other management theroy,

but in practice, it's really usefull, as least it can find out unstable factors correctly and ananlyse the noise factors.
