The domestic background. Father is a paternalistic policeman
probably desk-bound who reads the paper every night and works his way through cigars asymbol of manhood within the film to the cigarettes of women. Mother of course is in the domestic everyday work environment.
The horror on the face of the parents. They are doting mother and paternalistic policeman father. Both are churchgoers and upright pillars of the community.

Frolich returns home after the fight. One of the more expressioistic shots used in the film. The shadows, the claustrophobia of stairs and the bars with the hunched figure all speak of the transition from expressionist style into what would become classic thriller or film noir style.
The true horror of the events dawns upon Frolich’s dutiful policeman.
