# UCAS Tariff Points Table

### Preface

If you are browsing for course and checking out the minimum required grades you might find it useful to open another tab or version of your browser to have these these tables as a handy reference.

## Introduction

Please note these tables are relevant to the older specification which is being phased out. The new A level specification has the A* category which is new and will only apply at the A2 level. These will not become available until 2009-10.

Each A level carries a maximum of 120 points. A typical AS level course of three full A levels plus one AS level will carry a maximum of 420 points.

## UCAS Points Table for the Old Specifications

UCAS Points Table. Each Grade = 10 Points
 AS Level AS Level Points Add AS Points to A2 Points A2  Full A level A2  Level Points UCAS Points Tariff A 60 + A 60 120 B 50 + B 50 100 C 40 + C 40 80 D 30 + D 30 60 E 20 + E 20 40

The total number of UCAS points available for each full A level therefore = 120

###### In the table below there are some combinations which people in the real world actually get.

A key point to note about the table below is that not all points combinations are regarded in the same way by the institutions you are applying to.

A2 grades are better regarded by institutions because they are obviously harder to get. Many institutions ask for a certain number of points to be gained at the A2 level because of this.

As a result of this you may well be better off by putting more work into gaining a good A2 grade rather than trying to boost the points by pushing an AS level up a single grade from a B to an A.

 AS Level AS Level Points Add AS Points to A2 Points A2  Full A level A2  Level Points = UCAS Points Tariff Comments: Please Note well! A 60 + C 40 = 100 B 50 + C 40 = 90 C 40 + B 50 = 90 This ninety points is better than the combination in purple as A2 points are more difficult to get. A 60 + D 30 = 90 This 90 point combination is worse than the one in purple as most of it has been gained at AS level which is weaker than A2 E 20 + E 20 = 40
