problems with blogs

Follow-up to researching web blogs from Michael's blog

I hope we can take this blogs project on – what I have learnt – it is difficult writing for an unspecific audience and unsettling if we dont know if others in the group are reading or commenting on blogs, I dont know how to do a blog roll so that I can easily link to others in the group, I don t know how to easily comment on what others write, but it is interesting to read other blogs and it gets easier I guess,

  1. Is there not a simple way for people to incorporate a hit-counter into their blog? I wouldn't know being brand-spanking new to all this.

I'm afraid there isn't. We have intentionally avoided offering hit counters and stats for two reasons:-

    1. It encourages people to be competitive with other blog authors to see who can get the most hits. And the kind of content which gets large numbers of hits is not always the kind of content we wish to encourage…

    2. It can be disappointing to some authors if the hit counter reveals that they aren't getting as many hits as they had expected, or as many as their peers.

So for the moment, we don't support the idea of hit counters.

  3. As far as audiences go, for me the question of audience is the defining element of what makes a blog a blog, in that the audience that they’re intended for is oneself. For me, a blog fulfils exactly the same role as a diary, the only difference is that some entries I make available to other people, some only I can see. Some of the work-related ones are also for my colleagues and no-one else. If other people want to read them, then that’s fine, but only a bonus, not the point of writing them.
