Campus–Dwelling Creature

Today, I am moving off campus to go live in Barcelona city.

It made me think about the past five years or so, and how much actual time I’ve spent on campuses of one sort or another. The result kind of confirmed the way I already looked at myself: I really am a campus-dweller.

A short summary. Over the past five years, beginning in August 2001, I have lived on four campuses, each for a period of at least three months. In total I spent 31 of the last 63 months living on a campus. That is actually almost half of the time. The other parts I was either home on a break, travelling, or living at home working to earn money to travel. Last year also I lived off campus in Leamington.

I actually quite like the idea of campuses and their atmosphere. Campuses (especially in autumn) have this nice intimacy and little-villageness of pleasant academia. On the other hand, one problem I have always encountered is the fact that it remains difficult to separate studies from private things, which works for the worse both ways. And, because campuses in some way are always slightly closed off, they make you go crazy.

I am happy to go off campus for the rest of this academic year. But next year I will once again, and happily, inhabit Warwick campus.

Poetry Magazine? What? Where? What's It Like?

However much fun I like to make of them, lately I seem to be turning rapidly into a Third Culture Kid myself. Although of course with me it’s different. I’m not disrooted and disconnected from people with normal backgrounds and families, I’m just trying to keep up with my several scattered lives in a bunch of countries! (That’s not TCK is it? Please?)

In any case, trying to keep up with what’s happening in the UK and particularly in the Warwick scene as I will after all be returning next year, I read this email which was sent around some days ago, about a poetry magazine which has recently been started up.

I’m really interested in these kinds of things, so anyone who is as well, what’s it like? What was the launch party like, or hasn’t it been yet? And can I maybe contribute?

Instant Autobio: Boedapest

De hele ochtend heb ik liggen snurken in mijn festivaltentje maar zo rond twee uur hou ik het voor gezien. Niet dat de zon me daartoe dwingt ofzo, want alhoewel het weer aangenaam warm is staan we in een bosje beschermd door het frisse boomloof en bovendien verwend met een prettig briesje.

Ik steek mijn hoofd door het tentgat nadat ik deze heb opengeritst en kijk half met een komische blik, half slaperig in de rondte om te zien wat er allemaal gebeurt buiten mijn bijzijn. Er daar zitten dan mijn vrienden te keuvelen en te roken, een vredig begin van de dag. Ze kijken me vrolijk spottend aan zoals het klopt. Of toch…?

Als ik dan mijn hoofd een kwartslag draai zie ik de bron van het plezier.

Naast mijn tent, deels erop zelfs, liggen namelijk twee vuil uitziende punkers die daar kennelijk ter plekke zijn ingestort. De ene, de jongen, zonder shirt en met vervaarlijk opgeschoren haar, in een foetushouding en toch met zijn grote shirtloze lichaam heel wat ruimte innemend. En erbovenop een meisje die hem onhandig in haar slaap omhelst.

Een ongemakkelijke houding lijkt mij zo, maar ze liggen er toch heel vredig hun roes uit te slapen. Terwijl tientallen mensen met een schuine blik langslopen en ik met ze mee glichlach om duidelijk te maken dat ik de pret met ze deel en hierin vooral niet medeplichtig ben, wordt het meisje even wakker. Ze tilt kort en krachteloos haar hoofd op en werpt een blik op ons die zeggen wil: “Ik lig hier prima hoor. Wij blijven hier nog eventjes een paar uur.”

“Ze kwamen hier rond twaalf uur aan. Probeerden nog in je tent te gaan liggen”, zegt mijn vriendin de fotografe, lachend. “Ze begonnen nog flesjes rond te gooien”, zegt een andere vriendin. Ik schudt mijn hoofd, niet in staat zoveel baldadig geweld in deze twee onschuldig ogende slapers te zien en, trouwens, verwonderd over het feit dat er pal naast mij allerlei spannende dingen gebeurden waar ik simpelweg doorhéén sliep…

New Warwick Uni Periodical

I received an email some days ago announcing the establishment of a new student paper at Warwick Uni to be named “the Sanctuary”. Apparently it’s follows up on the “great success” of periodicals with the same name at Durham and Nottingham.

I was quite interested when I received it’s open invitation to contribute. Naturally depending on the flavour of this paper-to-be, it could work out quite well and push both itself and the Boar to a higher level of journalism. Although the Boar is not too bad, at times it tends to a kind of hunger for stories that sell, a problem that seems very hard to avoid for many publications. In any case, I’m awaiting what the outcome will be when the initial dust settles (apparently over a 100 people showed interest in contributing – what kind of a paper is this going to be?) and we’ll see if there’s some way I can contribute from a distance (since I’m in Barcelona this year).

Europe: Poverty and the Enlargement Question

Vaguely connected with my previous post and some other little facts and figures I found lately, I have come to wonder if it’s such a good idea that the EU again seeks to swallow up more countries in 2007.

Although fairly unscientific and perhaps conservative in the eyes of some, I am not sure whether it is a good idea that Romania and Bulgaria are claimed to have met all EU standards for joining to club.

Seeing Borat, whose “Kazakhstan” parts are all filmed in Romania, gives an impression of what the countryside in that country looks like, and what serious demographic differences exist between it and, well, a good part of the rest of Europe.

Poverty also happened to be one of the great election items in elections campaigns of Holland’s leftist parties running up to last Wednesday. Figures of poverty recently released draw a picture of 10% of people living in, what the Central Bureau of Statistics called “poverty”. But this is not everything. An article in a Spanish newspaper of this week furthermore claims that new research outcomes have shown that Spain continues to have a poverty rate of 18%, a “stable percentage since years”.

Employment can be said to be an important dynamic motor of poverty-reduction, however, current Europe-wide unemployment rates aren’t something to celebrate either. An average of 10% of the active population does not have work and hence is not able to contribute to wealth redistribution.

Undoubtedly this figure can be explained in part by the admission of the nine new EU members that joined the union some years ago. Evening welfare levels is a process that may take years, if not decades to make a change at large. The subtle welfare differences between the Netherlands and Spain (which joined the union in 1988), may be evidence of that. Although I admit near-total ignorance on matters of political economy and naturally wish the best for everybody, I have come to wonder: is it really a good idea to admit yet another two countries to the Union? Does the EU as a whole benefit from it? Will it not lower standards of welfare and social policy somewhat?

I pose this post rather as a question than as an answer, so please do not get upset with me if you’re Romanian or Bulgarian!

Borat, the Film

Yesterday night I saw this film the posters of which are really all over the city. After the initial hilarity and dicks-and-prostitute-laughter, I stayed behind with only one burning question, that kept me thinking through the night and into today.

Is this all fiction, or is it real? Or is it a mixture of the two, and if so, which parts have just been written like a screenplay. Just to clarify myself for the less comprehending reader. I do off course know Borat is actually a British Jewish guy and all, and that the parts in Kazakhstan are in fact filmed in Romania, but…

- does Borat really go out in the arena to pervert the US national anthem?
- does he really invite a hooker to a dinner party, or is even this dinner party fake?
- ...etc. etc. etc.

Some people might say that it doesn´t matter very much, but it changes the whole significance of the film! If most of these parts are real, than it gives an interesting look at the inner workings of the USA. If not, than what the hell (if anything at all) is Baron Cohen trying to show?

Een worp met de dobbelsteen

Met nog slechts uren te gaan voordat de stembureaus hun deuren openen, doet Maarten een poging deze verkiezingen te voorspellen.

Alle peilingen wijzen er op: de marges zijn deze verkiezingen extreem klein. Met een grootste peilingsverschil van slechts 3 zetels (in het geval van de SP zijn de peilers het niet eens) is het mogelijk een redelijk geinformeerd optelsommetje te maken. Maar alle redelijke combinaties die ik bedenken kan blijken onhaalbaar, terwijl absurde opties legio lijken te zijn.

Linkse regering
Een coalitie van PvdA, SP en GroenLinks, plus de Christenunie als vullertje strand op 75 zetels. Niet bepaalde een sterke positie voor een links blok, zeker niet in deze tijden van sterke links-rechts profilering. Bovendien gedraagt de PvdA zich als een eigenaardig broertje.

Combinatie op rechts
De vraag bij een coalitie CDA-VVD (samen redelijk sterk) is: met wie? Als men op rechts een coalitieregering Italiaanse stijl wil vermijden, zal men met de PvdA moeten regeren. Balkenende gaat nog wel, maar hoe zijn Verdonk en Bos te rijmen? En hoe gaat de PvdA dit uberhaupt uitleggen?

En anders?
Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat de SP deze keer in een regering terecht zal komen, tenzij er een onverwachts grote optelwinst aan de linkerkant zal zijn (onwaarschijnlijk). De Christenunie en GroenLinks zouden verder met hun redelijk modieuze opvattingen overal wel in het pluche kunnen opduiken, alhoewel dit voor laatstgenoemde wat moeilijker te verantwoorden zou zijn.

Ik voorspel…
Op zeer korte termijn verwacht ik dat tenminste twee van de volgende drie partijen sterke concessies zullen gaan maken:

Ik denk hierbij aan: een plotseling wel erg verzoenende toon; Verdonk eruit; Bos of helemaal niet in de regering of juist op een strategische positie (bijv. sociale zaken); een “herziening van het armoedebeleid” pro forma.

De SP zal sterker dan ooit weer positie nemen in de welvertrouwde oppositiebanjes.

En de volgende partijen mogen lekker buiten gaan spelen:

Binnen 24 uur zullen we zien of de dobbelstenen neer zullen komen zoals ik heb voorspeld.

The Benefit of an Old Mp3–Player

THIS MORNING AS I was listening to music on my way to class, for once I didn’t feel annoyed with the fact that my mp3-player doesn’t have a search system. This was because I discovered a kind of “advantage” in it.

My songs are on the disc in alphabetical order. As I was skipping endlessly forward to R for Radiohead, I got stuck on the way, with K for Kula Shaker, and ended up listening to that instead. I realised exactly the same had occured earlier. Apparently Kula Shaker and Radiohead for me are mood -compatible.

Hence a new function of old mp3-players (non i-pod stuff): it is an indicator for mood-compatible bands starting with letters lower than the one you’re looking for! Doesn’t that make your day?
