Being President of the USA
Another week White House Bush.
This week sees American president Bush entrenching himself even further in his battle against democrats in Congress. Refusing the parliament´s demand to hear his secretaries on oath about the sacking of attorney´s taints his credibility further, and helps to mark differences between democrats and republicans for the worse. At least, if you´re Mr. Bush.
Then came the news of the NYPD´s spying practices. Incredibly as it may seem to Europeans, an ordinary city police force got rather involved in the city´s security. The went as far as Canada and Europe to follow opponents of the republicans and of the death penalty, as well as ordinary theatre groups in order to safeguard the Republican Convention. Hearing of “hundreds of dossiers on various campaigning groups”, I couldn´t help but thinking of Stasi or KGB tactics. But all comparisons aside, such practices do not exactly help foment transatlantic feelings of warmth.
Despite being a rich and musculous strong-man type of state, I cannot help to take the US policy less seriously every time. And what´s even worse, I am honestly starting to believe that even I could do a better job. Should it really take a non-American to curb uncautelous arrogance?
