Some music manages to stir such a universal string that it can be heard all over the place, even many years after, yet, still without irritating. A good example of what I don’t mean is Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy, which, for a long time, was everywhere as well, but did start to annoy.
Moon Safari (1998) by the French band cq dj duo Air was a silent victory. Eight years after, the record still doesn’t sound backward or worn out. While nostalgic, profound and chilling pearls such as La femme d’argent and All I Need still masterfully move your state of feeling, they simultaneaously represent a time and stream of music.
Whenever I play the album, it reminds me of warm summer nights in 2001, drinking beers by the riverside. It was the last summer before I moved abroad and my somewhat unreal and romanticed memories of that time combine perfectly with the album. Air paved the way for Norwegian duo Röyksopp which became my college soundtrack, and Mylo, which will undoubtedly be part of tomorrow’s memory of today.
