Life's too short to drink bad coffee

I’m staring at the cappuccino foam in my red takeaway Costa coffee cup, realising how familiar I am with the taste of their coffee. I like it. In fact, I like it so much that other coffees don’t seem to pull their weight. Even the after dinner cup I had at a fancy dinner this past weekend left me wanting that familiar taste.

It’s not only my newly found coffee preference that this applies to, but I believe that once we find a thing we like we should try our best to stick with it. The CEO at my current employer – Winshuttle – says this time and time again: “Life’s too short to work in a job you don’t like”. It’s about passion – passion for food, passion for music, passion for creativity, passion for a product you represent, passion for life. We should choose our path in life based on what we like and love. We should strive not to settle with what we have, what we can afford, or what we are given. It’s not enough just to settle.

Obviously, money plays a critical role in the way each of us lives our lives. I chose to study computer science instead of fine art because I thought I would have more career prospects. I thought it would put food on the table. I was right. I still have a strong passion for painting and sketching, which has since expanded to a passion for writing poetry, short stories, blogs and starting but not yet finishing a novel. In fact, when my software-based career was under way I started to paint and sell abstract art work. I haven’t since moving to the UK but I still feel that this is within reach if I make the time to do it.

Practically speaking, we may not be able to afford swapping our compact cars for luxury sedans or our studio apartments for mansions. It’s not that easy, for the large majority of us at least (including myself). What we can do is start with the simple things, the daily decisions – eat the healthier option at lunch, take a taxi if it’s raining, wear your Sunday suit during the week, and spoil yourself with a good coffee now and then. We don’t have to splurge all of the time but a little bit of self-indulgence every now and then can do wonders for your self esteem. If managed correctly, it also aids self-control. My overpriced cup of coffee lets me appreciate the experience more and I find myself drinking fewer cups a days. That’s a tick in the health checkbox!
