First music session
Hello all,
Today we had the first music session in the Humanities Studio at Warwick. To start with, we looked briefly at some pronunciation problems when trying to speak Old French, especially how it differs from modern French e.g. differences in consonant and vowel sounds and whether or not to pronounce certain letters such as 'e' in words and phrases. We also had a quick chat about the context of the songs, but both of these subjects will be covered in specific workshops at a later date.
For the rest of the session, we worked on a version of 'Chanterai por mon corage' and produced a short recording of the first verse and chorus (this is the bare bones of the song but reflects the notation that is provided in a manuscript). Here's the notation (from Samuel Rosenberg's Chanter M'Estuet, 1981, p. 293) followed by the music file:
N.B. To listen to this file and to read the notation at the same time you might need to right click on the file and open the link in a new window.
And of course the musicians:
As a first attempt at working with this song I think that we did really well, and we'll be continuing this work at the next session. Thanks to all who were involved and please do let us know what you think below.
