Hello all,
Today we had the first music session in the Humanities Studio at Warwick. To start with, we looked briefly at some pronunciation problems when trying to speak Old French, especially how it differs from modern French e.g. differences in consonant and vowel sounds and whether or not to pronounce certain letters such as 'e' in words and phrases. We also had a quick chat about the context of the songs, but both of these subjects will be covered in specific workshops at a later date.
For the rest of the session, we worked on a version of 'Chanterai por mon corage' and produced a short recording of the first verse and chorus (this is the bare bones of the song but reflects the notation that is provided in a manuscript). Here's the notation (from Samuel Rosenberg's Chanter M'Estuet, 1981, p. 293) followed by the music file:
N.B. To listen to this file and to read the notation at the same time you might need to right click on the file and open the link in a new window.
And of course the musicians:
As a first attempt at working with this song I think that we did really well, and we'll be continuing this work at the next session. Thanks to all who were involved and please do let us know what you think below.
Follow-up to First practical session! from Medieval Crusade Songs
In preparation for next weeks music session, you might like to have a listen to the following clips from Youtube. (I'll only post the links as I'm wary of copyright issues)
The two songs are different versions of 'Chanterai por mon corage'.
This is just to give you a taste of what we are working with and how open the songs are to interpretation!
Hello again!
I'm happy to be able to give you the details for the first practical session...
We will be meeting in the Humanities Studio (accessible from the Ground floor entrance to the Transnational Resources Centre near to Cafe Humanities). The space is booked from 5pm-7pm on Friday 15th November 2013.
If you are able to come to this meeting, please let us know by posting a comment below, or by emailing Liam at l.g.lewis@warwick.ac.uk. Even if you can't make the full session please do come along whenever you can make it.
This post will shortly be updated with details of the songs that we will be looking at, but bring the pack from the introduction meeting with you as it has everything that we will need to get started.
Dear all,
I've attached the email that I sent out to everyone who's expressed an interest in the project. It has lots of information and links so do check it out.
Here's a link to the itunes page for the CD 'Music of the Crusades' by David Munrow and The Early Music Consort of London (1971). We listened to a few extracts form this CD in the meeting.
More information regarding next meetings to follow shortly...
Welcome to the blog for the Medieval Crusade Songs project. This will be the space where project updates are announced and where contributions to the project will be discussed and explored.
In the mean time, do come along to our first meeting on Wednesday 30th October at 3pm in H3.02.
