Basic SEO Tips For Small Business

SEO is one of the most misunderstood marketing topics by small business owners. It can be very difficult for small business owners to understand what will get them the results they require to get results online. Mik Dunne from digital marketing company ROI Digital Marketing provides some basic SEO tips for small business owners.

Keyword Research and Audiences

One of the most importnant elements of SEO is keyword research and understanding how your target audiences search online for your products and services. Its important to choose the right keywords that your target customers are searching for in order to drive relevant traffic to your side that will generate leads and enquiries. If you choose to optimise your site for the wrong keywords then it doesn't matter how much traffic you get to your from SEO, it just won't convert. To do keyword research you can use a free tool from Google called the Google Keyword Planner, which allows you to find out how many searches a month there are for specific keywords.

Ranking In Local Search

The local search market can be very competitive and it can take time for a site to rank highly in local search. One way to achieve rankings in local search quickly is to set up what is known as a Google My Business profile. This is a free service offered by Google that enables business owners to create local business listings that can appear on Google.

These profiles will appear for local search keywords such as "plumbers London". Once you create your Google My Business profile you will be able to write a full description of what your business does, assign it to the right categories as well as add a link to your site. This will help your site rank for local keyword quite quickly depending on what sector you are in.

Onsite Optimisation Tips

Its important from an SEO perspective that you site is well optimised. This include optimising:

  • Page Titles
  • Meta Descriptions
  • H1s
  • Onsite Content

All of these elements play an important role in helping your site to rank higher. As a small business owner or someone who works in marketing, you should understand the basics of how these can be optimised. I suggest that you read the Moz SEO Beginners Guide as this goes into detail on each of the elements that need to optimised in great detail https://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo.

Authority Linkbuilding & Promotion

As a small business owner you will want to market your brand online, as you do with all other channels including advertising.

For example if you want rank for a keyword such as "mini digger hire", you will want to secure links from relevant authority construction and building websites and blogs. This will help to boost the authority of your site in the plant hire sector as links from these sites are highly relevant. By securing links from authority relevant domains you are in turn increasing the authority of your site.

Over time as the authority of your site increases, so will the rankings on search engines such as Google and Bing.

Combining these elements over time will help to increase the authority of your brand online which will inturn help to increase rankings over time.

This Years Holidays

I have been lucky enough to go on two holidays this year, one to Tunisia and one to Ireland. We stayed just down near where I come from in Ireland, which has some great holiday lettings and holiday apartments. Ireland was great, I managed to catch up with most of my family.

The trip to Tunisia was nice, however you could sense there was an atmosphere in Tunis the capital with many streets blockaded, which was very strange to see, but the city was n high alert. It is sad to see what has happened there since, as they people are so lovely and are very proud of where they come from. I was there a week before the first incident happened and visited the very museum where the attack happened. I count myself lucky that was I was there before it happened, but also feel sad for the people involved.

I stayed in Sousse on a beach not far from where the second incident happened. It seems eerie to think of an attack taking place there where I had been just a few months before. The country was only starting to rebuild itself as a tourist destination and I hope they are able to do so from this, as tourism in one of the main drivers of the economy. The people are very proud and hospitable, but rely on tourism as their main source of income.

I hope that one day people will return to Tunisia as its such a beatiful country with amazing people.

A Long Way Back

It will be 10 years to the month in September since i started my Masters Degree at Warwick Univeristy. It doesn't seem that long ago and I had very different ambitions when I started the course. I now run ROI Digital Marketing a digital marketing agency that offers SEO services, which I started late last year.

This is very different from what I set out to do when I started my MA. I never imagined that I would be working in digital marketing 10 years ago and mine has been something of a journey along this path. I thought I would start to this blog to share my experiences with alumni and students alike.

My ambition when I started my Masters was to work in social research on race and ethic studies, specifically looking at racism in the workplace, a subject I have written two dissertations on and at the time I was very passitonate about the subject. I still am now, but to a lesser degree. I am now more passionate about the industry I work in having being in it for 7 or 8 years.

I did explore different options on how I might be able to work with the CRE, the Commission for Racial Equality, but there was little or no funding available so my options were limited. I think my life would have been very different if I had worked in this sector, as it is completly different from digital marketing.

I hope that I can share some of my experiences in work to help other graduates and alumni find their place. I hope you will enjoy and be able to take something from my blog.
