CBE Presentation Reflection – Learning Organization

I found that our classmates all met difficulties when it comes to the second presentation about how to use organizational learning to help imprementate EFQM. I raised a question - do you really believe in learning organization, and how it exactly work? Mr. Knowlese's answer is it is all about enviroment, but this is a very big thing. I will not repeat what I said on class, but I want to share my conclusion about learning organization, in a very practical level.

1st, This is all about enviorment, but it is a big thing.

I've read books wrote by Toyota, but they also cannot answer this question in detail. But, it is definately about enviroment.

2nd, Different assaignment.

(1) For the board -> provide learning enviroment, including share vision, defined learning structure...

(2) For the managers -> provide exact opportunity for staff to speak out their thoughts and give instructions

(3) For colleagues -> let them feel empowered

3rd, Very experimental idea!!!

I put it out when I work as a consultant for a NGO, which is a non-profit consultancy (the proposal is much more complicate then what I will mention).

They way is INTRANET - MENTOR FOR EVERYONE: set up a website for each staff with tags on their page (like a facebook without noise but tags), and then anyone could search tags and find a master of what you want to learn, and then let the master tell you a general direction and specific quesitons.

Because: (1) people could communicate knowledge and approach but not information, and saving time for restrcture all the information. (2) learning organization consist by people, not information. (3) information is tooooo much today, and the direction is tooo important, which could be generally provided by the master you've searched. (4) much more engagement and communication.

[I am really excited about my idea, and please tell me your thoughts about it!!!]

4th, still questions

Who should decide what knowledge should be learnt why whom?

Information is too much, and how can you choose those signal effectively?

Information is on the intranet (most big companies have online study system, but it is effecient?), but no one have time to choose which to learn.

So, I think I got my own conclution about OL and LO, and I also have a new idea and I really hope one day it could become true.

CBE Presentation Reflection – Present logically and Listen effectively

We've done our presentation today and I learnt how to represent logically as a presenter and listen effectively as a listener.

1st, How to structure an answer.

I think this is a universal way to answer any question, esp when you present it to others.

(1) Read resourses and learn from it - addition

(2) Choose what you want to say and put it into logic - subtraction

(3) Present it as a story

Any part of this approach cannot be ignored, and this is accourding to so many presentations I did.

2nd, Listen effectively.

I found some classmates got relief and cannot keep listening after they finish their ppt, this is what I did before. But now I learnt to listen carefully and try to figure out their logic and learn from it. Chiese proverb 三人行必有我师。

So, these are two points I learnt today about presentation, as presenter and as listener.

CBE Course Reflation – Reputation or not?

So luck I am I got a very reflexing weekend, so I watch a English series: Downton Abbey, in which I find their why of EXCELLENCE and makes me think.

I think his lord runs the abbey as an organization using excellence knowledge. Even it seems like there is no big deal in the abbey, but indeed everything is about people and how to make the abbey good. I notice some details. For instance, when the cook in the abbey becomes upset and always makes mistakes, what the bufler do is not kick her out but says that "I really think you have something to talk to me". It turns out that she is ill and she is afraid that they may let her go. Finally his lordship sends her to a hospital in London and she recovers and goes back to her position. I cannot imagine what I would do, if this happens to me and in this time. I guess I would definately sent her away.

What they always do are:

1) take care of everyone, no matter a maid, a footman or a bufler. When they are in trouble, ask why and help instead of letting him or her go.

2) work on enablers. Mr. Carson the bufler always control the staff in the abbey- working on enablers, and he will never let anyone do discent things. Natually, their results are perfectly good.

I think they totally use the excellence method, even it is many years ago, but there are also questions:

1) I think the high standard comes from reputation, so could we use it properly in company?

2) even the bufler did great job by excellence, but there are still those people who dont behave good. In my opinion, this is because personality, and this happens in company also. How should we deal with it?

CBE Project Reflection 2 – Undershtanding of EFQM Model

Today in our group work, when we talked about how to use Organizational Learning into help implementate EFQM, I found that we really have different understanding about EFQM. I gonna write the divergence, and I think we really need that EFQM senimar comes sooner!!

We all agree with that we should focus more on enables instead of results, because when we improve enablers, results will natually come better.

But, I think leadership is imporant, and people in that model refers to employers; strategy is not only about company-inner strategy, but also market strategy, which is more about outer things; resources refer to those things links to the company, such as supplyers. So, I think we work on leadership and these leadership may affect people, strategy and resourses. However, my mates thought that we work on people, and these people may affect strategy and resourses.

Really need that seminar.

& all knowledge and reflections about academic writing we learnt today, I will write it down tmr. I really have a lot reflections and think all things, academic writing, business proposal and life solving are all in the same way. Too late and Gnite.!

CBE Lecture Reflection 2 – Enablers and results

Today's lecture is about time management, I dont know if we count our work by hours is useful or not - because in many firms they charge clients by their employer's working hour, but I hardly find they use that to giving salaries; and I have learnt the 4 quadrants thing and use it. But the week planning form is useful, at least now I think it is. I will try it for next week and see.

What really inspire me is that to change enables instead of not only expecting good results. I think this is really important, because we are living in a very random world, in which sometimes we cannot figure out why this people win but the other lose. What the winner does sometimes is also the loser does. How to look at this situation decides how we gonna work and live. For me, after many years struggle, I have 2 solutions, which is based on the EFQM Model:

1st, a proverb in Chinese ıÊÂÔÚÈË£¬³ÉÊÂÔÚÌì (trying how hard is depending on you, but leave the successful or not to god).

We have to accept and face this reality. You did all your best does not mean you could get it. For instance, in China, Mckinsey only hire 3 students each year, but the capable students are more than 20 among more than 30000 applicants, then what decide if you can get it or not? So I always say to myself, dont get obssess with the results.

2nd, another Chiese proverb Ä¥µ¶²»Îó¿³²ñ¹¤ (which means sharpening your saw will not waster time of cutting wood).

When I first applied a internship, what in my mind is that I want to work for an foreign company, because at that time in my opinion, the state-owned companies in China are for those people who lying on the chair and do nothing everyday. But, after some internship and talks with my older friends in Chinese state-owned companies, I realized that the latter is more like the proverb I mentioned. They give you money and let you stay there, and those who stay vigilant may learn a lot, and they will give you a chance, if you make it, you get into the other level and if you cannot make it, and you may wait for so long with no one giving real attention to you. So I say to myself, no matter if you could see the result or not now, just stick to what you should do, and make it great! Then when the chance come, you could fly.

Overall, I think these may be the most important part of the EFQM - focus on enables but not only results; and we should also use it in our lives.

CBE Project 3 Reflection 1 – Audit and self–assessment

Writing about web page

Today our group started on the third mini-project and reading about ISO and self-assessment. By answer the topic question, I figured out the differences on aspects, including scope, appoach, strenghth and weakness. I dont want to re-type these, because all these are on our website.

But what got my attention is that how should we look at these two different way. In my opinion, audit gives company market advantage and gives customers directions, and at the same time force the company to jump into a level they could be not usually do; but, self-assessment is the long-term way to keep things improving. So

1st, companies should add these two up, so that they could build up their brand by auditing and challenge themselves to a new better level, but at the same time, self-assessment helps they live longer and better.

2nd, I think this is how should we look at each deadline and examnations in our lives, thought these things may change their style. But what should we do is neither (1) ignore the examines or deadlines - because these give us opportunity to present our study and life and challenge ourselves; nor (2) feel free when we done our exams, because what really matters is what we really learnt.

These are two aspects devotes their diffrent effort to improvement. Hope I always remember this.

CBE Group work Reflection 1 – a good teamplayer

Excuse me that I did not have enough reflection about the module content. I think it is because:

1st, we have no lecture but only contents on moodle and libriary resourses. Even though some may think all the knowledge is there, the peoblem is that you are not really learn from it. But my opinion is that should this is why we pay our tuition fee and study here? I really expect more structional and academic lectures. U know learn from each other and learn from masters in this field is totally different. (If Paul you see this, please dont take this as a offense. this is what I really need now and thats why I pay to learn here. also, you may consider this as a suggestion to mbe our programme :) )

2nd, this is only a start and not enough material (more general knowledge now) to echo that much, even if some of us may get work experience.

So, untill now, what I could do it to learn and agree from books and masters. I may raise my questions and wonders after some more learning and some real cases.

However, I truly leant some thing from our group work. Also, take us as a organisation, there are a lot room we could improve. As a group member, I learnt:

1st, always listen.

We need time to understand each other, even in future career, no matter if you are a boss or a colleague and in future life, no matter you earn more or less for the family. Everyone should stop talking and listen carefully. It is not only about respect, but also that you may find what you thought wad what you agree. I think that is what Deng Xiaoping said, seek common ground while reserving differences. When you have something in common, the question or the task is no longer that hard to be solved.

2nd, dont push others.

This is a little bit similiar to the 1st one. The difference is that nowadays most people know that we should not push other people and they even say that, but do they really do that? I dont think so. This is the part what I am now working on. I hope I may become more considerate. When I see my parents and their peers, what I found is that the successful ones are those who help other people to achieve and esp. those who encourage people accomplished what they cannot imagine they could.

3rd, to be fully prepared, and dont depend on others. (great imporant thing I learnt)

I would like to see myself as a "leader". The quatation mark means: I will definately consider myself as a leader and ask others to do that; but I require myself to think as a leader. Do I fully prepared? If others come only with some basic ideas, what should I do? So everytime, think as a leader, but do not act like one. Get fully prepared.

Alright, Gnite. I've read some related books, but I still not have that many ideas, but tmr I'll start my literary review on blog, which will definately help my project. Nite.

CBE Lecture Reflection 1 – up–side–down triangle

I think one of the most important thing I learnt today is the up-side-down triangle.

It helps me to figure out two things:

1. This up-side-down triangle could make a good corporate in which everyone could be happy. Because everyone here are cared by others.

This answers my curiosity about our centry. Everyone feel unhappy but we have to do in that way. We could slow down and care about others more. That is the very moment everything becomes meaningful when there is someone who cares. A big and expensive gift may make you happy or the very ontime celebration? Caring makes life meaningful. and this is what I learnt from a unhappy family.

2. I could do the up-sife down triangle and care for my employers even when I were in a big herarchical company.

This really works (at least I believe) when you in a bad enviroment. I have to say the culture differences. In my opinion, current China is more like the US in 1980s, and at that time economy boosted and everything is all about money, just like my recent favorite movie the Great Gatsby. Besides this period thing, cultural revolution deprived chinese believes and culture. So no rules and no fear when it comes to money. This is what I totally disagree. However, when I chat when my friends, who get higher than bachelor and study all over the world, we all admit that if we come back to china we have to get used to the Chiese way, nowadays way, which we all totally dont agree. But if we want a respectable life, we have to do that.

So this triangle at least help me to realize (this may exist before, but I never connect this with my own life back to China) there is one way to make a small world which is in my charge beautiful and with careness. I truly hope one day if I become a leader, I could still remeber this and stick to it.

CBE Lecture Questions 1 – Employer and Employee

At our first class, Paul and us talked about one topic. If the leader should always think about and help the employer. Paul suggested that the leader should. But I doult about it.

1st, there is no data to support any of us, which appoach would spending more money, and also there are a lot of things cannot be measured as money, such as people's care, which seems like counts for no money but it is the most precious one.

Also, I really wonder how should we discuss a topic without statistics???! but it seems like all the management and academic thing goes this way.

2nd, if we sout people in group and give them salaries by the group performance. The bright side is that all people in group are going to help each other definately. But is that the job of leader or the teacher to re-sort it? The question comes again. How could we measure which appoach takes more cost, the re-sort one or the always care for employer/classmates one?

If you reader have any idea or perspective, plz comment, because this is not about the lecture, I want to figure it out.

MBE Learning Enviroment

This is Vanessa's first blog in Warwick.

At the very begining, I really want to give some praise for our learning enviorment, which is:

1. learning the study methods but not only the knowledge.

I recogniced this firstly when I worked as PR manger in a NGO (Enactus) in my university years. We do charity by teaching those who need help and money to earn by themselves, but by donations such as money and clothes from warm-hearted perole. It turns out good, and those people earn money to support their lives and gain respect. Also, I do think I will use this learning style and even teaching stlye (if I have a chance) in all my life.

2. everyone should reflect on what we have done and learn from it.

Even though I have not leave school, but when I took internships I really found out it makes a great different if a person reflect or not. Reflection also works in our daily life. So many people repeat their mistackes again and again. And especially when the one grow older - he or she thinks nobody especially who is younger than he or she has no right to challenge him or her, and when it happens in some hierarchical places, such as China. I felt that, believe me.

In my opinion, everyone should reflect about daily life and especially take a look back after a year or a quater. Because things changes a lot when it takes a longer time.

3. Sharing is important. Communication is more important.

I began this entry yesterday, but finish it today. Firstly, I thought sharing and blogging is a brilliant idea, and giving marks makes everone try harder on this without conservation. But, today, I found out that there were so many entries, and after my homework, I cannot see even more than 5 of them. I think this is what I concern about the peer group work. People learn from each other, but sometimes it is not benefitial to take shorter time to look a book from a professor or learn from some masters. Maybe there should be some room for us to reflect. :)
