Supporting A–level students who thought they had left maths behind

This conference paper discusses the outcomes of the Level 1 Coaching for Mathematical Resilience course, for a group of 5 school students (Sept to Nov 2014), who volunteered to become ‘peer coaches for mathematical resilience’ in school.

The course provided a safe and collaborative working environment in which the school students learned to manage their own reactions to mathematical ideas, to explore choices and to reflect on how to support someone else to find the resources to overcome their own barriers to learning mathematics. The data confirm that once a school student has begun to develop their own personal mathematical resilience, they can successfully coach themselves and others to manage their anxiety and develop as resilient learners and users of mathematics.

Learner outcomes improved noticeably as a result and, as coaches, the students were able to coach others including at a higher level of maths.

First Call to November Conference

Writing about web page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/ces/research/current/mathematicsresilience

Today, we have issued a Formal Invitation to take part in an international conference focussed on what is being done to address mathematics anxiety and avoidance, and to promote mathematical resilience, in learners at home, at school and at work.

We will be offering a platform for any contributor to share a paper or a video virtually, in addition to the option to attend face-to-face. Do consider asking your local school, authority, employer, MP, Union what they are doing to change the mathematics culture around them.

People who have had previous bad experiences of mathematics which are holding them back from progress (over 30% in UK) need access to support and a change of Mindset.

Chapter about mathematical resilience in new book

Writing about web page http://www.routledge.com/books/details/9780415822855/

Clare and I have had a chapter published about mathematical resilience in the 2015 Routledge International Handbook of Dyscalculia and Mathematical Learning Difficulties. The chapter gives an overview of the scope of the construct mathematical resilience in helping practitioners pull together a broad base of international research into a pragmatic approach to solving the 'mathematics problem'.
