Follow-up to 4th Blog from Mahima's blog

The start of a new academic year and a new blog entry!!

Networking Skills:

I think my summer was rather productive; I did two internships this year, one at KPMG and the other at Edelwiess. Although both were good experiences I have come to the conclusion that I want to pursue a career in law and this year I am first going to try and apply for a summer internship at a legal firm. The first step towards getting this internship is to go the careers fair this thursday and focus on having one or two conversations with firms that are there. I also want to continue my involvement with societies. I will be attending the Oxford MUN conference this year and perhaps one more conference in the spring term. I have already applied to one world week and am considering applying for the economics summit. I aim to atleast finish the skills portfolio award by end of this year and apply for the warwick advantage award this year

Time Management:

I think time management is even more crucial this year because I will be living in leamington which is atleast 20 mins away. I also feel that I want focus on getting a first this year which is why I will only involve myself with a few events and societies. I am already a part of WIDS magazine and blog team, I want to continue my involvement in Model United Nations and perhaps get involved with the debating societies and attend a few conferences. Apart from this I have applied to the one world week and to the warwick economics summit. I do not want to get involved beyond this because I have applied for a student calling job on campus to get work experience which will require 6 hours a week and I don't want to compromise on my grades this year. Apart from this I have continued my policy of having reminders on my phone about classes and events and putting up to-do lists on my lap top to get me more organized and to remember everything that I plan to do.

Essays, Math and Reading:

Despite not doing so well in Math last year I have still taken econometrics which is the higher level of math because a lot of the modules that I plan to do in my third year have that subject as a requirement. I realize that this would require me to be super attentive in the lectures as well as work harder at the subject. I am fully prepared to do this. In every essay that I do this year I will focus on first creating an essay plan. I'm also going to go to the library and finish the reading as soon as the lectures ends because I have a lot of time between lectures and seminars this year. I have tired out a few skills that I learned in the speedy reading seminar and this has really helped me improve my reading speed.

Hopefully I will be able to keep up with my guideline for this year!

4th Blog

Follow-up to Blog 3 for the P1 workshop from Mahima's blog

Dear Samina,

Although I have not had the time to write a follow-up for the blog because of exams I thought I should take the time out today to update you on some of my action points:

Networking skills:

I was selected to be a part of the warwick international development summit which I feel is a great opportunity. I also aim next year to take part in TEDx at Warwick as well as to join the debating society. I also want to try out for the talks team in Warwick One World Week. I think this year I have gained some experience by helping organize warwick MUN and will be in a better position to volunteer for these societies. I have also continued writing for the Summit Magazine. My last article was published in the issue on Migration and I will also have an article published in the next issue on volunteerism. Next year I also want to take out to do some community service and I am thinking of becoming an ambassador for teach first for the Warwick campus

Essay Writing:

I feel that my essay writing skills have improved to a great extent after I realized how to structure my answers. I am not getting 2:1 in most of my essays and I even got a first in one essay. Although I still think there is room for improvement. I have decided to write skeleton essays for all my submissions next year as these greatly help in having a coherrent structure and argument. I also want to attend the workshop on writing skills next term which I wasnt able to do last term

Time Management:

I think that spending less time online has greatly helped me with regards to time management. Next year I aim to keep pace with all my reading and do the reading before every lecture as I feel that will help me keep pace with the lecture as well. I have decided to take my laptop/ or a pad or paper to every lecture in order to take down notes. I didnt take down any notes this year in lectures and I think that put me at a disadvantage. I am also going to try an be more regular at lectures especially towards the end of the term and not miss more than two or three lectures a term in any one module

Blog 3 for the P1 workshop

Follow-up to follow up block from Mahima's blog

Dear Samina,

Just to update you on my action points so far:

1. Improving time management:

I have realized that I waste alot of time on facebook and watching TV online so I have decided to stop watching during the week at all and only to watch them on friday night or over the weekend. I am also determined to log on to facebook only once a day at night before going to sleep. In order to help me with this resolution I have disable all my facebook notification that reach me by email so that i am not tempted to go online. I have also decided to set an alarm half an hour before lectures that will indicate to me that I need to start preparing to leave immdediately. Instead of coming back to my room in between lectures I have decided to to stay over the library and this has really helped catch up with my reading and stay up to date with my work. I also attended the A1 workshop on speedy reading to help read faster in order to get through my reading on time. I am now caught up with my economics reading and my world politics reading and only behind on introduction to politics.

Improving networking skills: I was invited to an interview by the warwick development summit and I hope that I am given a chance to participate in it as it would be a really good experience. I also regularly go to MUN meetings and actively participate in them by volunteering to do extra work and also giving input and suggestion as to how the warmun conference should be run. I have also applied for an insight day in PWC and have been offered the opportunity to attend one of the insight days in london and I feel that this would be a good opportunity to get to know people

Improving essays: I have also signed up for a academic workshop on essay writing that is to be held on the 15th and I hope that this will give me adequate preparation for the June exams. I have to submit three more essays over the course of the next few days and I am keeping in mind about the feedback that I got from my seminar: to have a clear thesis stated in the introduction and again in the conclusion and to use strictly academic language.

I have added a new action point which is improving my quantitative skills as I fear that I did terribly in the statistics test held yesterday because I blanked out and I am going to work doubly hard for the second test as well as the june exam.

Follow-up to Reflecting from Mahima's blog

Over the past week my time management does seem to have improved silghtly although not by a great amount. I am in time for most of lectures and seminars although just barely.

One thing that I am proud of this week atleast is that I have managed to finish my essay in advance and submit it a week a head of time. I spoke to my seminar tutor about how I could improve and she gave me some pointers. I kept in mind all of her feedback from the last essay and I am hoping that this shall be reflected in the final essay grade that I get.

I also have been regularly attending MUN and am actively involved in organizing WARMUN that will be held in march this year. I have developed a raport with people in the society and I feel that this has gone some way in improving my networking skills.

I will also be applying to Warwick international development summit this year as I think this will be a huge learning opportunity.

On the downside I am have fallen very behind in some of my reading and this causing me a great deal of concern. I am only up-to-date with my macroeconomics reading. My aim for the next week is to catch up on this reading especially during reading week because I will be more time to do so.

Reflecting

When I first came to Warwick i applied for everything, right from one world week to the economics forum. I attended countless interview after interview and was rejected from all these forums and recently I was rejected from the Warwick India Forum and the Warwick Welcoming Services. When analysing why this was happening I realised that I have a few major shortcomings and I need to make some major changes in order to be successful. The first thing that needs to be changed is my poor time management skills and my lack of prioritising activities. I come ten minutes late for most of my lectures and seminars, never have to time to re-read my assignments before I sumbit them and I have even started this blog a week before I have to!

I also have to start being more social and network more with people and improve my people skills.

Recently I also did very badly in a formative essay because I did not use structure my arguments in the correct way. In order to be more successful I have decided to take the following measures:

Start perparing and getting ready to leave half an hour to every lecture and limit the time on social networking website

Attend all of Model United Nations meeting and not miss any one of them

Get involved with one of the charities on campus, perhaps oxfam

Attend the Talk by the economics society this thursday and network and interact with people in the society

Start work on my essay which is due two weeks later today itself

I have also enrolled in the academic seminar on speedy reading and how to write academic essays so that I improve on the academic front as well

Instead of going back to my room after every lecture I have decided to go to the library in between lectures and catch up on the reading for the lecture on the spot
