Try again

Follow-up to Upheavals from Michael's blog

Apologies for the total lack of updates over the past couple of weeks. Unfortunately exams and associated stresses have taken over a little bit but I now have my life back.

Just about the last vaguely athletic thing I did before my degree interfered was another 12–mile training run, which saw me dip under 1.30 for the first time. Quite chuffed with that but I'm not sure what effect two weeks sitting in the library will have the next time I do anything.

Might try and get back into it this week with a shorter run, which I'm told might be the way to go anyway. I'll also try to be a bit more consistent with the blogging in future.

Much love

Hi all

BIG NEWS (amply justifying the vulgar use of capitals). John and Jo – two of the Cardiff posse – have dropped out of running the marathon, leaving Ian and myself to face the Big Apple alone. Obviously, this is a real shame but they've decided to turn their attentions to something closer to home, probably a European run at some point this year.

There were a variety of reasons but personally I think they were just a little bit intimidated by my scary levels of physical fitness. Made it round my second training run yesterday in 1.30:23. Agonisingly close to the mystical hour and a half but a significant improvement on the first attempt. I have, however, made the valuable discovery that running when it's warm really takes it out of you. Might plan the weather a bit better for future outings (and yes, I have the power to do that).

In related news, the Leamington Observer are on the case for a bit of publicity so look out for that in the coming days.

Yours as ever

Let the training begin

Follow-up to New York Marathon from Michael's blog

The well–oiled machine that is the NY06 marathon team has now officially glided into action. Watch this space for local and national publicity over the next few weeks following a round of emails which will turn into a full–on badger in the coming days.

Went off on my first training run yesterday afternoon. Left the house without much of an idea where I was going and ended up the other side of Warwick Parkway station. I stopped and turned round at a random tree because – well, because it seemed like the thing to do. No–one can say I'm not professional!

Not entirely sure how far I went in the end but as far as I can work out it was something of the order of 12 miles. It took me just over an hour and a half and didn't feel like too much of a stretch. Encouraging signs but I'll have further thoughts about the route. Any brilliant ideas for places to run around here would be welcomed!

So there it is: approx 12 miles in 1:32.13. Shouldn't be a problem.

It should be noted that I have spent most of this afternoon in Oriental Star, however, so any advantage gained yesterday may have been offset by six helpings of noodles and spring rolls followed by mountains of cake and ice–cream. My body is a temple.

Yours in obesity

New York Marathon

Writing about web page http://www.justgiving.co.uk/ny06

Hi everyone

Don't ask me why I agreed to do this. It was late … I was tired … it just happened. The important thing is that I have agreed to run the New York Marathon this November in aid of Tenovus, a charity supporting education and research into cancer.

I'm not alone though, good lord no: I am being joined in this enterprise by my brother Ian and two other friends at Cardiff University. Over the next few months, I will be getting myself in training and building up to the marathon on November 5th and this blog will move along with that.

I've run three half–marathons and any number of smaller distances but never anything approaching 26.1 miles so this might get a little tricky. Whatever happens, I'll keep you updated and I'd love to get your input/encouragement/abusive feedback.

Oh yeah, and if any of you supremely generous people fancy donating a little bit to the cause, please follow the link above.

Thanks very much, see ya
