A strange neighbour, that doesn't have curtains on her window

5 out of 5 stars

I don’t normally move too far out of my limited musical fandom of around ten artists, but one of those artists happened to be Ben Folds. One day I obtained a recording of a live gig by “The Bens”: Messers Kweller, Lee and Folds, performing together and solo bits and such. The intention was just to listen to the Folds stuff, but the other bits were really good as well, to the point I went out and bought* thier albums: Kweller’s Sha Sha and Lee’s Awake is the New Sleep.

Turns out, Sha Sha is one of the best albums I’ve heard all year. It did take me until now to realise I liked it that much though – I listen to it so much and generally find myself compelled to sing along with the loud bits, admire the beauty of the slow balladid bits (often both in one song), and generally just smile along to whole album as there’s not one bad song on there.

From the rock of Commerce, TX and No Reason to the more measured loveliness of Harriet’s Got A Song. I’m just crap at relaying the greatness of music by words, but seriously, go buy it, especially if you’re a Folds fan. Because it’s ace.

Oh, and I thought Lee’s Awake is the New Sleep was a bit pants.

*not true, actually staying in and bought via iTunes
