I have never read Penguin and will certainly be reading this soon as it looks fabulous! I love Hayley’s use of hot seating. This should help the children access a higher level of interest and understanding with the text. It would also provide the opportunity for them to practise their oral skills which are of high importance in KS1.
The idea of using thought bubbles to give the penguin a voice is an excellent idea which I will be borrowing in the future. Encouraging the children to give the penguin a voice provides another dimension to their experience of the story. As Hayley mentions in her blog, it is also a lovely way of promoting empathy for others.
