LIPSoc – what we do!

Lipsoc, or the Linguistic Improvement and Practice Society, exists for people to practise languages in a new way. We don’t offer lessons or homework to our members; instead, we provide conversation groups which are led by a native speaker. This is a much more ‘natural’ way of practising than sitting in a classroom staring at a blackboard. If you are late to the group or have to leave early, we don’t mind! It is informal and can even be over a coffee or two! If you can’t make it for a few weeks, we won’t be offended!

For example, a typical French conversation group will have six or seven people wanting to learn the language and one or two native speakers of French leading the conversation. The group will then have a conversation which is normal in every way, except it’s in French! If the group wants, it can pick topics for conversation current affairs, or something lighter or it can play a game in its selected language.

Groups exist for French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, and English.

If you would like to lead a group in your native language, let us know by emailing us at su285@sunion.warwick.ac.uk and we will see what we can do.

We are currently looking for group leaders for academic year 2006-7! Why not give it a try?

We are a pretty cool society, so check us out! If you want more information about the group timetable or how to join, read below!
