LIPSoc – what we do!

UNFORTUNATELY WE ARE NOT A KISSING SOCIETY! (HAHAHA!!)

Lipsoc, or the Linguistic Improvement and Practice Society, exists for people to practise languages in a new way. We don’t offer lessons or homework to our members; instead, we provide conversation groups which are led by a native speaker. This is a much more ‘natural’ way of practising than sitting in a classroom staring at a blackboard. If you are late to the group or have to leave early, we don’t mind! It is informal and can even be over a coffee or two! If you can’t make it for a few weeks, we won’t be offended!

For example, a typical French conversation group will have six or seven people wanting to learn the language and one or two native speakers of French leading the conversation. The group will then have a conversation which is normal in every way, except it’s in French! If the group wants, it can pick topics for conversation – current affairs, or something lighter – or it can play a game in its selected language.

Groups exist for French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, and English.

If you would like to lead a group in your native language, let us know by emailing us at su285@sunion.warwick.ac.uk and we will see what we can do.

We are currently looking for group leaders for academic year 2006-7! Why not give it a try?

HOW TO JOIN LIPSoc…

Hi! If you’re reading this you have taste because you’re interested in languages too! Yeah!

Now the societies fair is over, if you want to join LIPSoc you have 2 options!

1) JOIN ONLINE – go to the student’s union website and look in the list of societies, we are LINGUISTIC IMPROVEMENT AND PRACTICE. Click on it and then read the information and scroll down until you get to the option to buy standard or associate membership. They are the same price although most people get standard membership because students are warwick should generally get this one! £2.50 for the year = BARGAIN! Go to basket and pay online using a debit/credit card.

2) Take cash to union north reception opposite Xanana’s and buy membership there! Make sure you say the right society!
