day 34–3

When revising the translation theories, translating another Chinese song, and thinking about my daily life, I can't help but wondering: can communication really work?? Have I really ever understood a person? or have I ever really made myself clear? It seems that the world I've ever known is simply my way of misunderstanding the reality. Maybe the only purpose of living is to be happy in the misunderstanding?

It’s funny you should say that because a friend who had been surprised at someones reaction to something said to me “You never really know someone, do you?” I wasn’t convinced that was true and then she went on to put a figure on it when she said “You only ever know someone about 70%”. I was more surprised that she thought that than about what the person had said to her to make her come to this conclusion especially as it’s someone she’s lived with for most of her life.

Some of the other things I’ve found thought provoking recently are, starting with something I heard on TV last night when someone was being offered advice, “If you put up a great deal of resistance to something you are trying to stop something of yourself getting through.” Then, in The Independant where they print interviews with people and one of the questions is “What would you like to change about others?” and someone said “I wish people would take more notice of other people” which I thought was quite a nice sentiment although I think in general people do take a fair bit of notice of others but since that first interview about 9 out of 10 people seem to say the same thing in their interview. Perhaps she just started a trend or maybe lots of people do think that people don’t take enough notice of each other. Talking of trends, I’ve lost track in the last few weeks of the number of people who’ve said to me “She’s very needy” (about different people, but always women, it seems you have to be female to be needy) and the other one is “it’s not a biggie” which is rather nice because it always seems to be said in a reassuring context to allay someones misgivings when they are worried about something.
