Trial of Blackwell Reference Books Online extended to 29 February

A reminder that the trial to this resource has been extended to 29 February.

Blackwell Reference Books Online provides online access to more than 400 reference works in the humanities and social sciences. The Library has already purchased the e-book of many of the book titles in the collection, such as the Blackwell companions to the ancient world but, during the trial, users can search across the complete collection and follow links to related references.

To access the trial, login to the Trials page on the Library website, listed on the Electronic Resources by type section of the Library website

Digital Researcher 2012

Vitae and the British Library have recently announced their jointly-run event Digital Researcher 2012. Designed for postgraduate researchers and research staff within any UK institution, this interactive event will be held at the British Library on Monday 20th February 2012, and will provide an opportunity for researchers to see whether new technologies and social media tools such as microblogging, RSS feeds, social networking and social citation sharing could benefit their research.

Vacation Opening Hours

The Library will be closed from midnight on Thursday 22 December 2011 until Wednesday 28^th December, reopening at 11.30am.

Opening hours over the remainder of the holiday period will be :

Wednesday 28 December: 11:30am-6pm (self-service only)
Thursday 29 December: 11:30am-6pm (self-service only)
Friday 30 December: 11:30am-6pm (self-service only)
Saturday 31 December: 11:30am-6pm (self-service only)
Sunday 1 January CLOSED
Monday 2 January CLOSED

The Library will reopen as normal on Tuesday 3 January 2012 at 08:30am.

The Learning Grid will be closed from 6pm on Saturday 24 December 2011 to 7am on Monday 26 December 2011. Staffing will be 12 noon to 6pm on the other days of the vacation period. Normal hours and staffing resume from Monday 9 January 2012.

Vacation Loans

Undergraduate Vacation Loans on Standard Loan items will begin from Monday 5 December 2011. Items will be due back during the first week of the Spring Term 9-13 January 2012.

There will be no recall of Standard Loan items during the Christmas Vacation.

Please note 3 day loans will remain as 3 day loans and Short Loan items remain as due back at 11:00 the next day.

Translated Texts for Historians

We have a free trial of Translated texts for historians E-Library until 30^th November, available through this link

The collection consists of 50 volumes from 300-800 AD translated into English from Greek, Latin, Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, Georgian, Armenian and Old Irish. It includes histories, chronicles, letters, annals, formularies, compendia, political speeches, military and theological handbooks, poems, documentary sources, records of church councils, biblical and theological commentaries, sermons, church histories, Christian treatises, Christian and pagan panegyric and polemic, Neoplatonic texts, lives of saints, bishops and popes.

To access it, login to the Trials page, then

select Translated texts for historians from the list of available trials and go through to the site,

click on Institutional login and select University of Warwick from the list.

Please try it out and let me have feedback as we may be able to find funding to purchase it if there's sufficient interest.

Pavlopetri

The BBC2 programme City Beneath the Waves: Pavlopetri, shown on 9th October at 8pm, was another good example of the part science and technology plays in archaeology.

Welcome to new postgraduates

Good to meet postgraduate students this morning during Alison Cooley's and Fabienne Marchand's session in the Teaching Grid. This was a very useful introduction to epigraphy and also demonstrated the part technology is playing in Classics - for example, a Document Visualiser makes it possible for a group of students to view a page from a book simultaneously or to magnify an inscription. (It can also be used very successfully for displaying ancient coins and artefacts, as I've seen on previous occasions.)

Epigraphers are indeed a cooperative community and many collections of inscriptions are freely available online as part of ongoing projects. We already have links to some of them on the Library catalogue, and others can be added as the year goes on.

At the end of the session I was able to show some of the students the Research Exchange and publicise the various networking opportunities available, which can help research seem a less lonely and daunting experience. Greek Islands Trip

In September we visited 4 Greek islands - Patmos, Chios, Lesvos and Samos. So much to see and take in, much of the itinerary new to me. Peter Jones (founder of Friends of Classics) organised readings from the works of Herodotus and Sappho, and Stan Ireland (Classics Department) gave talks on the area and the ancient world in general. Highlights for me were the Roman 2nd century AD Aqueduct at Moria on Lesvos and the 6th century BC Aqueduct-Tunnel of Eupalinos and the Heraion, both near Pythagoreio on Samos. We also visited some superb Byzantine churches, including the Monastery of St John on Patmos, Nea Moni and the chapel of Panayia Krina on Chios, and Moni Leimonos on Lesvos. Not strictly related to libraries or to information resources but it was good revision for me of ancient sites, classical architecture and Greek history. A very worthwhile trip and it renewed my enthusiasm for the subject as we go into the new session.
