Resnet Problems Again?

Writing about web page http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/services/its/facilities/studentcomputing/

When exactly are they going to fix the issues with ResNet?

To reduce the risk of a re–occurrence of Internet connectivity problems the ResNet firewall will be power cycled twice daily at approximately 07:30 hours and 19:30 hours from Friday 28th April.

I call bullshit on this. Fix the underlying problems and there is no need to power cycle the damn firewalls… I repeat – where is the redundancy? ITS in case you read this blog, redundancy:

Duplication or repetition of elements in electronic equipment to provide alternative functional channels in case of failure.

There you go.

Replacement hardware will be delivered in the morning and should it become clear that this upgrade has been unsuccessful the new hardware will be installed. (regarding the upgrade of the "code" in the firewall)

Unbelievable

  1. Is it still bullshit if it's a good workaround for the problem?

I've no idea what's going on with the res net, but it's evident from your post that neither do you. If the new firmware fixes the problem, why swap the hardware?

And redundancy is actually a difficult thing to acheive in a network like this. How much is it worth in hardware and complexity to avoid the kinds of downtime that a hot–failover HA system would provide? If there is some firmware problem with this firewall, then instead of one faulty firewall you'd have two.

  2. I think the next biggest student entreprenuar idea is to:

OUTSROUCE INTERNET BOARDBAND SERVICES INTO CAMPUS RESISDENTIAL HALL

    it's going to be a multi–million business !!

Actually, it started out being essentially outsourced; a company called Data Integration installed it and maintained it for the first few years. However, the results were poor, so the university took it back in house. Results are still poor, so what's next?
